Sugar stocks witnessed a sharp rally after domestic sugar prices climbed to record highs, with several companies gaining strongly in Wednesday's trading session. Balrampur Chini Mills emerged as the top gainer, rising 13.5%, while Dwarikesh Sugar Industries gained 12.2%.
The rally comes amid rising sugar demand ahead of the festive season, concerns over domestic and global supplies, and the government's decision to tighten inventory limits for large sugar dealers.
Government Tightens Sugar Stock Limits
The government has introduced stricter stock limits for dealers consuming or trading more than 10 metric tonnes of sugar per month. Under the new rules, such dealers cannot hold sugar inventory exceeding 15 days' supply.
The measure will remain in effect from September 1 to November 30, a period when sugar consumption typically increases because of major festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Dussehra and Diwali.
Demand from sweet manufacturers, biscuit companies and confectionery businesses generally rises during this period as companies build inventory ahead of the festive season.
Sugar Prices Remain Under Pressure
The latest move comes after sugar prices increased by around 10% last month and reached record levels despite an earlier government directive limiting dealer inventories to 30 days.
Market participants are also keeping a close watch on sugarcane production. Erratic rainfall and dry weather conditions have raised concerns about supplies, potentially keeping sugar prices elevated over the coming months.
Sugar Stocks See Sharp Gains
Several sugar stocks benefited from the latest price movement. The major gainers included:
Balrampur Chini Mills: 13.5%
Dwarikesh Sugar Industries: 12.2%
Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar: 8.2%
Dhampur Sugar Mills: 7.6%
Shree Renuka Sugars: 6.6%
EID-Parry (India): 1.3%
Among these, Balrampur Chini Mills emerged as the market leader, posting the strongest gain of 13.5%.
Ethanol Demand Adds Another Layer
The ethanol blending programme is also influencing the sugar market. Concerns have emerged that increasing diversion of sugarcane towards ethanol production could affect the availability of sugar for domestic consumption.
Brazil is another important factor for the global sugar market. In June, around 58% of Brazil's sugarcane juice was reportedly directed towards ethanol production as producers sought better returns. Brazil also raised its mandatory ethanol blending target from 30% to 32% in July.
The combination of festive-season demand, supply concerns and ethanol-related developments could keep sugar prices and sugar stocks in focus.
What Investors Should Watch
The recent rally in sugar stocks highlights how changes in commodity prices, government inventory policies, sugarcane production and ethanol demand can influence the sector.
However, a sharp rise in sugar stocks does not necessarily guarantee continued gains. Investors should monitor sugar prices, government policies, production estimates, ethanol blending decisions and company-specific financial performance before making investment decisions.
