Diwali holds special significance for the Indian stock market, as the festival marks the beginning of a new Samvat year for investors. The traditional Muhurat Trading session is considered an auspicious occasion to make investments and begin the new financial year on a positive note.
Historical market data suggests that Indian equity benchmarks have generally performed well during this special session. An analysis of the past decade, from 2016 to 2025, shows that both the BSE and NSE Nifty 50 ended higher in eight out of 10 Muhurat Trading sessions.
With Diwali approaching, investors will be watching the special trading session scheduled for Sunday, November 8, 2026, which marks the beginning of Samvat 2083.

How have and Nifty performed during Muhurat Trading over 10 years?
The historical record shows a positive bias during Muhurat Trading. Between 2016 and 2025, both the Sens and Nifty 50 closed in the green on eight occasions and declined on two occasions.
According to the historical analysis by Business Standard Research, the delivered an average session return of approximately 0.34% over the 10-year period, while the Nifty 50 recorded an average gain of 0.31%.
The strongest performance during this period came in 2022. On October 24, the and Nifty 50 both gained around 0.88% during the special trading session.
The weakest session was recorded in 2017, when the declined 0.60% and the Nifty 50 fell 0.63%.
In the latest Muhurat Trading session, held on October 21, 2025, the closed 0.07% higher at 84,426, while the Nifty 50 gained 0.10% to finish at 25,869.
Trading volumes during Muhurat sessions are generally lower than on regular market days, and the gains have typically been modest.
Does the Muhurat Trading rally continue in the following month?
A positive close during Muhurat Trading does not necessarily mean that the market will continue rising in the following weeks.
Historical data from 2016 to 2025 shows that the delivered positive returns one month after the special session on eight occasions. The Nifty 50 recorded gains in seven of those 10 periods.
The average one-month return was 1.69% for the trading and 1.43% for the Nifty 50.
The strongest performance after Muhurat Trading came in 2023. During the following month, the trading advanced 6.58%, while the Nifty 50 gained 7.07%.
The one-month period after the 2020 session was also positive, with the trading rising 5.99% and the Nifty 50 gaining 6.09%.
However, the trend was not consistently positive. After the 2021 Muhurat session, the market fell 5.53% over the next month, while the Nifty declined 5.61%. Both indices also lost more than 4.5% in the month following the 2016 session.
The figures suggest that although Muhurat Trading has historically shown a positive bias, the direction of the special session is not a reliable indicator of market performance over the following month.
