The controversy surrounding Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to resign from the post of Chief Minister, despite losing the election in West Bengal, continues to escalate. Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani has termed her decision “unpardonable” and contrary to the democratic order.
In an interview, Mahesh Jethmalani stated that as soon as the election results are certified by the Election Commission, a Chief Minister cannot legally continue to hold office. He asserted that Mamata Banerjee should have resigned voluntarily.
Mahesh Jethmalani further argued that if she fails to do so, the Governor should remove her from office. He added that if Mamata Banerjee persists in remaining in her post, the Governor could even initiate action to remove her with the assistance of the police.
Mamata Refuses; Alleges Seats Were “Snatched Away”
Mamata Banerjee has categorically stated that she has not lost the election and, therefore, will not resign. She has alleged that approximately 100 seats belonging to her party were “snatched away.”
She has also accused the government and the Election Commission of collusion regarding the election results. In response, Mahesh Jethmalani remarked that if she possesses evidence to support these claims, she should approach the courts.
Other Leaders Also Raise Questions
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also stated that if Mamata Banerjee does not resign, she could face dismissal. He emphasized that the country does not function according to the whims of a single individual. He further asserted that the public has delivered a mandate in favor of the BJP in West Bengal this time, and Mamata Banerjee ought to accept it.
