Usually, the guard is present in the last compartment of the goods train, but since the goods train was in the loop line, neither the driver nor the guard was present in the train. Because of this, when the Coromandel Express collided, the lives of the loco pilot and his guard of the goods train were saved.

Due to a wrong signal, the Coromandel Express went into the loop line and collided with a goods train standing there. After the collision, some bogies of the Coromandel Express collided with the Bengaluru Express passing through the downline.
