Posting on the social media platform ‘X’, TMC Rajya Sabha MP O’Brien wrote: “Narendra, you claimed that you are the candidate for all 294 seats in Bengal. Stop making tall claims; accept this challenge instead.” He further wrote: “On May 4th, when Mamata Banerjee and the TMC secure victory in Bengal, resign from the post of Prime Minister. Do you have the courage?”

Mamata Accuses BJP

During the voting for the second phase of the Bengal elections, Chief Minister and TMC candidate from the Bhabanipur constituency, Mamata Banerjee, leveled serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Mamata Banerjee alleged that the BJP is attempting to forcibly rig the elections. She also claimed that TMC workers have been subjected to violence and that the voting process is being obstructed.

Speaking to journalists, she remarked: “Look at how our worker was beaten up last night. What kind of hooliganism is this? This is not how voting is conducted. Voting is meant to be a peaceful process; it is a festival of democracy.” She added: “However, this entire process has been completely ruined. The intention is clear: the BJP wants to forcibly rig the elections. Our workers and the people are prepared to lay down their lives, but they will not abandon their ground.”

Second Phase of Voting Underway in Bengal

In the first phase, held on April 23, a record voter turnout of 91.78 percent was recorded, signaling a high level of electoral enthusiasm. In the second phase of voting, currently underway on Wednesday, the electoral fate of a total of 1,448 candidates hangs in the balance. This includes 1,228 male candidates and 220 female candidates.

The state has a total electorate of over 3.22 crore voters, comprising 3.21 crore general voters and approximately 40,000 service voters. The electorate comprises 1.64 crore men and 1.57 crore women, while 792 voters have been registered under the third gender category.

The participation of young voters is also significant, with over 4.12 lakh voters in the 18-to-19 age group taking part in this election. Meanwhile, more than 3,200 voters aged over 100 are also participating in this grand festival of democracy.

Furthermore, special arrangements have been made for over 57,000 voters with disabilities (PWD) to ensure they can cast their votes with ease. The Election Commission has put in place comprehensive measures to conduct the election in a fair and peaceful manner. A total of 41,001 polling stations have been established across the state, comprising 39,301 main stations and 1,700 auxiliary stations.

Of these, 8,845 polling stations are being managed entirely by women, 13 are being operated by personnel with disabilities, while 258 have been developed as ‘Model Polling Stations.’

Webcasting facilities have been provided at all 41,001 polling stations, enabling the monitoring of the voting process. Politically, the TMC—under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee—is striving to return to power for a fourth consecutive term, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is engaged in a vigorous election campaign with the objective of bringing about a change of power in the state. Now, all eyes are fixed on May 4th, when the election results will be declared and it will become clear who will hold the reins of power in Bengal.
