PBKS vs RR: 'We slipped up, but we won't break...' — Who did Shreyas Iyer identify as the real villain behind PBKS's first defeat?

Posted on 29th Apr 2026 11:15 am by rohit kumar

The Rajasthan Royals have halted the Punjab Kings' winning streak in IPL 2026. The Punjab team suffered a 6-wicket defeat on their home ground. Powered by half-centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Donovan Ferreira, RR defeated PBKS to secure the third spot on the points table with 12 points.

The RR team successfully chased down the target of 223 runs in just 19.2 overs. Following this defeat, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer appeared visibly disappointed. In the post-match presentation, he defended the batsmen but squarely laid the blame for the loss on the bowlers. Explaining the reason behind this, he stated that they failed to execute their plans. Despite posting a total of 222 runs, the team ended up losing the match.

PBKS vs RR: What did Shreyas Iyer say after the defeat?

In fact, following the loss, when Captain Shreyas Iyer was asked where things went wrong, he responded:

"I felt that 224 on the scoreboard was a fantastic total. Kudos to the batsmen for the way they came out and dominated the bowlers. It was an excellent performance on this wicket, which was a bit sticky and slow. However, I feel we fell short in our bowling, particularly in terms of execution. We had planned to bowl a lot of slower balls, take the pace off, and deliver yorkers. I think we lagged behind a bit in that regard. Additionally, they built a tremendous partnership in the middle overs; specifically, Ferreira and Shubham Dubey came in at the end and scored crucial runs."

Speaking about his bowling unit, the PBKS captain remarked:

"Look, this is a format where I feel many players have evolved their game; when they come out to bat, they start attacking right from the very first ball. Consequently, it is a challenging task for bowlers to stick to a single plan. But ultimately, I believe it all comes down to execution. If you have a plan and you execute it well, you win." "And today just wasn't our day." – Iyer

"I feel it is essential that we stick to what we have been doing—the routines and processes we have been following all along. We played a match, then had to travel, and subsequently come back to play another game. So, I feel the body was a bit fatigued as well, though that certainly cannot serve as an excuse here. However, we now have a few days to refresh ourselves, go back to the drawing board, and make a strong comeback."

What was learned from the defeat?

What lessons did Punjab Kings take away from this loss? Responding to this, Captain Shreyas said:

"Absolutely. I believe this is our first defeat of the season, so it definitely teaches us a great deal. We have played numerous matches where we successfully chased down scores of 200-plus, and also defended totals exceeding 200. So, this was simply one of those matches where things didn't go our way, and we just have to put it behind us. Looking back, I feel there are many things that *could* have been done differently; however, I prefer to look forward, remain positive, and maintain an optimistic outlook regarding our approach." – Shreyas Iyer

When asked about the decision to bring in Harpreet Brar as an 'Impact Player,' the PBKS captain remarked: "Yes, absolutely. I felt it was difficult to score runs against the spinners because the ball was holding up a bit on the surface, and they were getting some turn as well—not a massive amount, but enough to make a difference. As for Harpreet Brar—playing his very first game—the sheer personality he displayed was remarkable; he conceded just 25 runs in his four overs and emerged as the team's best bowler. I truly salute him for the way he maintained his approach and attitude throughout the entire match."

It is worth noting that Punjab Kings will now be playing at a new venue—Dharamsala. When asked what impact this change of venue would have, Captain Iyer smiled and simply replied: "None at all—our only goal remains to win."
