Clashes Near Russia Border: The Ukrainian army reported the first death of a soldier on Saturday. Along with this, Ukraine also accused Moscow-backed rebels of rapidly increasing attacks. The Joint Military Command for Eastern Ukraine said a soldier had lost his life in an ongoing conflict between two separatist areas near the Russian border. Ukraine's emergency service said two of its employees were injured in the attacks on Friday.
Separatist leaders in eastern Ukraine ordered a full military mobilization on Saturday amid escalating violence in the region and Western fears of Russian aggression under its guise. Denis Pushilin, the head of the pro-Russian separatist government in the Donetsk region, issued a statement on Saturday announcing a full military mobilization and urging reserve force members to come to the military enlistment office.
Another separatist leader Leonid Peschnik in Luhansk has also made a similar announcement. Pushlin cited an "imminent threat of aggression" from the Ukrainian military. However, Ukrainian officials have denied these allegations. Separatists and Ukrainian troops have been fighting for nearly eight years, but violence along the border separating the two sides has escalated in recent days, including the bombing of a car in Donetsk and the bombing of a humanitarian convoy.
It is estimated that Russia has deployed more than 150,000 troops along the border with Ukraine. The move comes after violence erupted in the region in recent days between the Ukrainian military and pro-Russian rebels. Western countries have expressed apprehension about this violence that Moscow can attack under its guise. Separatist authorities in Donetsk and Luhansk on Friday announced sending women, children, and the elderly to neighboring Russia. These efforts were immediately followed by several explosions in the rebel-held areas.
At the same time, US President Joe Biden said that he is sure that Russian President Vladimir Putin has decided to attack Ukraine and its capital Kyiv. Pushulin said that women, children and the elderly would go first and that Russia had made arrangements for their stay. He alleged in a video statement that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was going to order an offensive in the area soon. Authorities have started evacuating children from an orphanage in Donetsk and other residents are also boarding buses bound for Russia. Long queues have formed at gas stations, as most people have made preparations to leave on their own.
Putin has ordered the government to pay about $130 to every person leaving the region, half of the average monthly salary in the war-torn Donbas region. According to separatist officials, more than 6,600 residents had been deported to Russia from rebel-held areas as of Saturday morning. The separatist conflict in eastern Ukraine began in 2014 and has killed more than 14,000 people.
