Viral videos circulating on social media have sparked concern after showing e-rickshaws allegedly being stopped remotely using a smartphone app. While the clips have raised fears among drivers and passengers, experts clarify that the issue is limited to certain Bluetooth-enabled lithium-ion battery systems and does not affect every e-rickshaw. Meanwhile, the government has removed two such apps from app stores and is reviewing the matter to strengthen public safety.
What Is the BAT-BMS App?
The app at the center of the controversy is BAT-BMS (Battery Management System), developed by Shenzhen Grenergy Technology. Similar apps, including Lossigy, are also available for battery diagnostics.
These applications were originally designed for technicians, battery manufacturers, and service engineers to monitor battery performance, including:
Battery charge level (SOC)
Voltage and current
Temperature
Battery health
System diagnostics
The apps use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology and typically work within a range of around 15 meters.
How Does the E-Rickshaw Battery Issue Occur?
According to experts, the problem is not with the BAT-BMS app itself but with some low-cost lithium battery packs that are shipped with Bluetooth enabled by default and without password protection.
If Bluetooth security is not configured properly:
Anyone nearby may detect the battery.
The app may connect without authentication.
In vulnerable battery systems, users can access battery controls.
Selecting the discharge or power option may temporarily cut power to the e-rickshaw.
This issue is generally limited to Bluetooth-enabled lithium-ion batteries. Traditional lead-acid battery-powered e-rickshaws are not believed to be affected.
Can This Become a Safety Risk?
Yes. Experts warn that if an e-rickshaw unexpectedly loses power while moving:
The vehicle may stop suddenly.
Passengers could lose balance.
Vehicles approaching from behind may collide.
Busy roads could become dangerous.
However, Delhi Police has stated that no official complaint has been received so far, and investigators are also examining whether some viral videos were created merely to attract attention on social media.
Government Removes Battery Apps
Following public concern, the Central Government reviewed the issue.
IT Secretary S. Krishnan confirmed that two battery-related mobile applications identified during the investigation have been removed from app stores.
The government has also indicated that discussions will be held with app store operators to ensure similar applications that may pose public safety risks undergo stricter scrutiny before being made available.
How Can E-Rickshaw Drivers Protect Their Vehicles?
Drivers using Bluetooth-enabled lithium battery systems can improve security by following these precautions:
Change the default Bluetooth password immediately.
Enable password protection within the Battery Management System (BMS).
Activate remote access lock, if available.
Disable Bluetooth completely if remote monitoring is unnecessary.
Get the battery checked by an authorized technician.
Avoid sharing battery access credentials with unknown persons.
These measures can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access.
Not Every E-Rickshaw Is Vulnerable
Experts emphasize that the issue is not universal.
Only certain lithium battery packs with unsecured Bluetooth connectivity are considered vulnerable. Properly configured battery systems with password protection are largely protected from unauthorized access.
