The Indian stock market witnessed selling pressure last week, with the combined market capitalization of five of the country's top 10 most valuable companies declining by around ₹1 lakh crore. IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) recorded the biggest fall, with its market value declining by ₹34,263 crore during the week.
The broader market also remained under pressure. The Sense fell 489.92 points, or 0.62%, while the Nifty declined 204.65 points, or 0.83%, over the week's trading sessions.
TCS, Reliance Industries Among Major Market Cap Losers
Five companies among India's top 10 most valuable firms witnessed a decline in market capitalization during the week. These included:
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)
Reliance Industries
HDFC Bank
ICICI Bank
State Bank of India (SBI)
TCS emerged as the biggest loser, with its market valuation falling by ₹34,263 crore.
The decline in the market values of these companies reflects the broader weakness witnessed in the benchmark indices during the week.
Five Companies Add ₹55,149 Crore in Market Value
Despite the broader market decline, several major companies managed to buck the trend. The combined market capitalization of Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), and Hindustan Unilever increased by ₹55,149.45 crore.
LIC was among the notable companies to record an increase in market value, highlighting the mixed performance across India's leading stocks.
What Is Market Capitalization?
Market capitalization, commonly known as market cap, refers to the total market value of a company's outstanding shares.
It is calculated using the following formula:
Market Capitalization = Number of Outstanding Shares × Current Share Price
For example, if a company has 100 crore outstanding shares and its stock trades at ₹500, its market capitalization would be ₹50,000 crore.
Why Does Market Cap Matter to Investors?
Market capitalization is an important indicator used by investors to understand the size and relative valuation of a listed company.
A company with a large market capitalization generally has greater visibility in financial markets and may have easier access to capital. However, market cap alone does not determine whether a stock is a good investment.
For shareholders, changes in the share price directly affect the company's market capitalization. When a stock rises, its market value generally increases; when the stock falls, its market capitalization declines.
Market Cap Decline Does Not Mean the Company Lost Cash
It is important to understand that a fall in market capitalization does not necessarily mean the company has lost an equivalent amount of cash from its balance sheet.
Market cap changes primarily reflect changes in the market price of a company's shares. Investor sentiment, earnings expectations, economic conditions, interest rates and broader market trends can all influence share prices.
