The Supreme Court today refused an urgent hearing on a petition filed regarding severe air pollution in Delhi NCR. These days the pollution situation in Delhi is so dire that it is difficult for people to breathe.
It was said in the petition that the government should be directed to take strict steps to control air pollution in Delhi NCR and a complete ban on stubble burning. The burning of stubble in neighboring states fills the air of the national capital with suffocating smoke. On this, a bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud said that the matter does not come under the purview of the judiciary only. The bench comprised Justice Hima Kohli and Justice JB Pardiwala.
Can restrictions be imposed on every farmer of Punjab-UP?
The bench asked the petitioner, will the ban help in this? Can the ban be applied to every farmer in Punjab or Uttar Pradesh? After this, the court said that some cases can be looked into by the courts and some cannot because those cases are not judicially liable.
The bench made the remarks after advocate Shashank Shekhar Jha mentioned his petition before the CJI's bench for an urgent hearing. Earlier, a separate bench had posted the matter for hearing on November 10.
urge to summon chief secretaries
The petition has sought a direction to summon the Chief Secretaries of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh and make them personally responsible for any incident of stubble burning anywhere.
