The government has approved the Railway Board's proposal to increase the fare in long distance train travel. The increased fare of trains will come into effect from July 1.

The maximum increase will be two paise per kilometer. Local trains and MST holders have been given relief. No change has been made in the fare of suburban and season tickets. The increased fare will be applicable only in mail, express and super fast trains.

Railways gave instructions

Railways has instructed all zones to inform about this change through media, announcements and notices. The new fare list will also be displayed at the stations, so that passengers do not face any problem.

Earlier in 2020, the Railways had increased the fare. According to the notification of the Ministry of Railways, the increased fare for travel of more than 500 km will be applicable in all categories of general, sleeper, first class and AC trains.

How much will be the increase?

Fares have been increased by 2 paise per kilometer in AC Chair Class, AC Three Tier, AC Two Tier, Three Economy, AC First Class, and Executive Class, while fares of non-AC trains will increase by 1 paisa per km.

Railways has clarified that there is going to be no change in the fares of suburban trains. There is no change in monthly season tickets (suburban and non-suburban) as well.

The increased fare will be effective in trains like Shatabdi, Rajdhani, Tejas, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Mahamana, Gatiman, Antyodaya, Garib Rath, Jan Shatabdi, Yuva Express, Anubhuti Coach and AC Vistadome. There will be an increase of 2 paise per km in their current basic fare after 500 km.

No increase in other charges

Railways has clarified that there has been no change in reservation fee, superfast surcharge and GST in the said trains. Fares will also be taken in rounding off as per the old rules. Like six rupees instead of five rupees four paise.

No impact on already booked tickets.

The Railway Ministry has given relief to those passengers who have booked their tickets before July 1. The increased fare will be applicable on tickets booked on or after July 1.

This is happening for the first time. Till now, when the fare used to increase, extra fare was charged from the passengers during the journey. But this time no difference in fare will be shown in the reservation chart. However, if the ticket is taken from any TTE or station during the journey after July 1, then it will be made at the new fare.

Impact on fares of ordinary non-AC trains

Second class: Half paisa per KM up to 500 km - no increase

501-1500KM - Rs 5

1501-2500KM - Rs 10

2501-3000KM - Rs 15

For mail/express trains (non-AC)
