IND vs SL: Dhruv Jurel Faces Spin Test in Sri Lanka, Gets ‘Words of Wisdom’ From KL Rahul

Posted on 14th Aug 2026 02:31 pm by rohit kumar

India wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel is preparing for a crucial challenge ahead of the Test series against Sri Lanka. With the opening Test scheduled in Galle, Jurel has been putting in extra work in the nets, particularly against spin bowling.

The conditions could provide a stern examination of his technique. Galle is traditionally known for assisting spinners, while Jurel's recent Test record shows that he needs to find a way to become more effective against slow bowling.

Jurel's Recent Test Form a Concern

Jurel announced himself with a memorable century against the West Indies in the Ahmedabad Test last October. However, his subsequent seven Test innings have produced scores of 44, 6, 14, 13, 0, 2 and 19.

More importantly, he has been dismissed by spin five times during this period.

That weakness could become a major talking point in Galle, where Sri Lanka's experienced spinner Prabath Jayasuriya could test India's middle order.

Why Spin Could Be Jurel's Biggest Test

Jurel generally prefers a relatively cautious approach against spin, waiting for the bowler to make a mistake. While that method can work on batting-friendly surfaces, Galle's turning conditions and potentially uneven bounce could demand a more proactive approach.

Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan is also competing for a place in India's batting order. His ability to attack spin with shots such as the sweep, reverse sweep and use of the feet could strengthen his case for selection.

KL Rahul Gives Jurel Valuable Guidance

Jurel has spent significant time working with KL Rahul in the nets. Rahul's experience could be particularly valuable because he is the only batter in India's squad with previous Test experience in Sri Lankan conditions.

Rahul had also prepared for the tour by training on specially prepared pitches in Mumbai.

India bowling coach Morne Morkel has highlighted Rahul's role in helping younger teammates understand the conditions and sharing his experience during training sessions.

However, Jurel will ultimately have to develop his own method for tackling Sri Lanka's spinners once he walks out to bat.

Jurel Has Already Succeeded in Galle

There is one major reason for optimism. Jurel has already performed strongly at the same venue, having scored a century and a half-century for India A against Sri Lanka A in Galle.

That experience could provide him with valuable confidence ahead of the Test series.

Rishabh Pant's Presence Adds to the Pressure

Jurel's challenge is not limited to his battle with Sri Lankan spinners. With Rishabh Pant established as India's first-choice wicketkeeper-batter, Jurel's strongest route to a regular place in the XI is likely to be through his batting.

That makes the Sri Lanka series particularly important for his Test career.

A Defining Opportunity for Jurel

The first Test in Galle could prove to be a significant opportunity for Dhruv Jurel. His previous success in Sri Lanka provides encouragement, but his recent struggles against spin highlight an area that needs immediate improvement.

If Jurel can counter the turning ball effectively and produce a substantial score, he could strengthen his position in India's Test setup. Failure, however, could increase the pressure from contenders such as Sarfaraz Khan.
