The result marks India’s second consecutive finish among the top five nations at the Asian Games, although the country’s overall medal count was lower than its record performance at Hangzhou in 2023.

Athletes who represented India at the Aichi-Nagoya Games will attend the programme alongside their coaches and support staff. Officials of the Indian Olympic Association, representatives of national sports federations and officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports are also expected to be present.

Asian Games 2026: India Finishes Fourth With 85 Medals

India concluded its campaign in Japan with 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals, taking its overall tally to 85 and securing fourth place in the standings.

Medal category                                         India’s tally

Gold                                                              21

Silver                                                            27

Bronze                                                          37

Total                                                              85

The performance highlights India’s competitiveness across a broad range of sporting disciplines. However, the total fell short of the country’s record medal haul at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023.

India’s campaign included notable successes in archery, shooting, boxing, wrestling and several team sports. The contingent also recorded landmark achievements in disciplines where Indian athletes had not previously won Asian Games medals.

Team India’s Major Successes in Team Events

Team events were among the highlights of India’s Asian Games campaign. The men’s and women’s cricket teams both won gold medals, while the men’s and women’s hockey teams also finished on top.

The Indian men’s hockey team defeated Malaysia 5–1 in the final to retain its Asian Games title. The victory also secured direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, according to reports on the tournament.

India’s men’s and women’s kabaddi teams continued the country’s strong record in the sport by winning gold medals. These results underlined the importance of team competitions in India’s overall medal tally.

Archery, Boxing and Wrestling Boost India’s Medal Count

Archery was one of India’s strongest disciplines at Aichi-Nagoya 2026, producing nine medals, including five golds, two silvers and two bronzes.

India also won six medals in boxing, including three gold medals. Wrestling contributed another six medals, with two golds, two silvers and two bronzes.

These performances helped strengthen India’s overall position in the medal standings. The country also celebrated a landmark result in women’s individual golf, where Pranavi Urs won gold, while Indian athletes collected medals in a range of other disciplines.

The PMO also highlighted historic achievements in recurve archery, India’s first Asian Games gold in the women’s trap event, a silver medal in weightlifting after a 28-year gap, and a silver in Greco-Roman wrestling that ended a 64-year wait for an Indian finalist in the discipline.

Athletics Produces the Highest Number of Medals

Athletics was India’s biggest medal-producing sport at the 2026 Asian Games, with 24 medals: one gold, nine silver and 14 bronze.

Despite the high overall tally, the number of athletics gold medals was lower than at the previous edition. The women’s 4x400m relay team won gold, while Indian athletes also secured podium finishes across track and field events.

The athletics results reflect both the depth of India’s talent and the challenge of converting a high number of medals into more gold-medal finishes. Improving performance in individual events will be an important consideration as India prepares for future international competitions.

Shooting and Badminton: Areas for Improvement

India won 15 medals in shooting at Aichi-Nagoya, comprising three gold, eight silver and four bronze medals. While the discipline continued to contribute substantially to the national tally, its gold-medal count was lower than at Hangzhou 2023.

Badminton proved more challenging for the Indian contingent. India won a bronze medal in the men’s team event but did not secure an individual-event medal.

The results in these disciplines point to areas where performance reviews, athlete preparation and competition planning could help India strengthen its position at future multi-sport events.

A Large Indian Contingent With New Talent

India sent a large team to the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with reports citing 501 athletes and 310 debutants. The participation of so many first-time competitors highlights the expanding pool of Indian sporting talent.

The Games offered emerging athletes valuable experience against strong Asian opposition. Success in archery, boxing, wrestling and team events also showed that India’s medal-winning potential extends across several disciplines.

At the same time, the decline from the previous edition’s medal haul highlights the need to sustain performance across the full competition rather than rely on strong finishes in selected sports or on the final days.

What Lies Ahead for Indian Sports?

India’s fourth-place finish and 85-medal tally represent a significant achievement, but the results also provide a basis for reviewing the country’s preparation and performance across sports.

The next challenge will be to build on the disciplines that delivered gold medals while addressing gaps in areas such as athletics, shooting and badminton. Greater consistency, effective athlete support and stronger performances in individual events could help India improve its results at upcoming international competitions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interaction with the Asian Games contingent on October 15 will recognise the athletes, coaches and support staff who contributed to the campaign. The event also places the spotlight on the wider task of converting India’s growing sporting depth into sustained success on the international stage.
