Tata Elxsi Shares Rally 7% After Q2 Results: Why Brokerages Still Warn of Downside

Posted on 14th Oct 2026 11:59 am by rohit kumar

Shares of Tata Elxsi surged more than 7% in early trading on October 14 after the design and technology services company reported its second-quarter results for FY27. Investors responded positively to double-digit year-on-year revenue growth and improved operating performance. However, several brokerages remain cautious about the stock, citing valuation concerns, slow recovery in European automotive demand and the time required for new deals to generate meaningful revenue.

The stock touched an intraday high of around ₹3,657 on the BSE, according to market reports. Despite the rally, analysts have questioned whether the company's earnings growth can justify its valuation in the coming quarters.

Tata Elxsi Q2 Results FY27: Key Numbers

Tata Elxsi reported operating revenue of ₹1,055.7 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, marking a 15% increase from ₹918 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Revenue also grew 3.4% sequentially compared with the June quarter.

Net profit stood at approximately ₹170.3 crore, up around 10% from ₹155 crore a year earlier. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, however, profit was almost unchanged from ₹170.6 crore in Q1 FY27.

The company also reported EBITDA of ₹231.4 crore, up 7.1% quarter-on-quarter, with an EBITDA margin of 21.9%. Its EBIT margin improved sequentially to 19.7%, reflecting better operating performance.

Why Are Analysts Cautious Despite the Tata Elxsi Share Price Rally?

The market's positive response to the results does not necessarily remove concerns about the company's future performance. Brokerages are focusing on three key issues: the stock's valuation, continued weakness in Europe's automotive sector and the gradual conversion of new business wins into revenue.

Tata Elxsi has reported a sequential improvement across its major business verticals. However, analysts want to see consistent growth and a more sustained recovery in margins before becoming more optimistic about the stock.

JPMorgan: European Automotive Weakness and Margin Concerns

JPMorgan has maintained a Neutral rating on Tata Elxsi and set a reported price target of ₹3,200. Compared with the previous closing price of ₹3,426.40, that target implies downside of approximately 6.6%.

The brokerage has highlighted the contrasting performance of automotive markets. Demand and deal activity in the United States and India have supported growth, while uncertainty in Europe continues to weigh on the sector.

JPMorgan also expects margin recovery to take time. Although management has indicated that profitability should improve gradually, a return to earlier margin levels may not happen immediately. The brokerage has reportedly reduced its earnings estimates for FY28 and FY29, reflecting lower margin assumptions.

The concern is that even if revenue improves, slower margin expansion could limit the pace of earnings growth.

Motilal Oswal: Sell Rating Despite a Higher Price Target

Motilal Oswal has retained its Sell rating on Tata Elxsi while setting a price target of ₹2,970. Against the October 13 closing price of ₹3,426.40, this represents potential downside of around 13.3%.

The brokerage expects revenue growth in the second half of FY27 to improve compared with the first half. Nevertheless, it believes that maintaining this momentum will depend on the company's ability to secure new contracts and scale existing projects.

New engineering and technology engagements can take two to three quarters to reach full operational scale. This creates a gap between winning a contract and seeing its full contribution reflected in revenue.

Motilal Oswal has also identified Europe's automotive market as a significant risk. Cautious spending by vehicle manufacturers, subdued demand and delays in client decision-making could affect both project spending and the finalisation of new deals.

Morgan Stanley and JM Financial Also Flag Risks

Morgan Stanley has maintained an Underweight rating on Tata Elxsi, with a reported price target of ₹3,400. Its concerns include the stock's valuation and the need for sustained growth to support the share price.

JM Financial has maintained a Reduce rating with a reported target price of ₹3,358. The brokerage sees support from automotive projects in the US and India, alongside momentum in the Media and Communications business. However, slower decisions among European automotive manufacturers remain a concern.

These ratings show that brokerages are not necessarily dismissing the latest quarterly improvement. Rather, they are questioning whether the improvement can continue strongly enough to justify the market valuation.

European Automotive Demand Remains a Key Risk

Tata Elxsi's Transportation business is an important contributor to its technology services operations. The company reported 2% sequential growth in constant-currency terms in the Transportation vertical during Q2 FY27.

Growth in the US and India has provided support, but the European automotive market remains less predictable. Vehicle manufacturers and suppliers are being cautious with engineering expenditure, while longer approval cycles can delay new projects.

For Tata Elxsi, a sustained recovery will depend partly on whether customer spending improves and new contracts begin contributing more significantly to revenue. If deal conversion remains slow, the company may struggle to accelerate growth as quickly as investors expect.

Can Tata Elxsi Sustain Its Growth in H2 FY27?

Management has indicated that business momentum is improving across its key verticals, including Transportation, Media and Communications, and Healthcare and Life Sciences. The latest results show sequential revenue growth across these segments.

However, the second half of FY27 could still be uneven. Seasonal factors, customer spending patterns and the timing of new project ramp-ups may influence quarterly performance. A faster improvement in Europe would also help reduce pressure on the Transportation business.

Investors will therefore be watching upcoming quarterly results for evidence of stronger revenue conversion, sustained margin improvement and a more consistent recovery in demand.

Tata Elxsi Share Price Outlook: What Should Investors Watch?

The latest rally highlights the difference between the market's immediate response to quarterly results and brokerages' longer-term earnings expectations. Higher revenue and improved operating performance have supported sentiment, but concerns about valuation and the durability of growth remain.
