Riots broke out in Mexico following the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán-López, the son of drug lord El Chapo. Gang members protesting against his arrest torched several vehicles on the streets. They attacked an airport and fired on two planes. Three soldiers of the security forces were killed during the firing. According to the governor of Sinaloa state, more than 18 injured have been hospitalized so far.
Father's drug network runs Ovideo
Ovidio, 32, is known in the world of drug trafficking as 'The Mouse'. Together with his brothers, he operates the drug network of father El Chapo. It is counted among the world's largest drug networks. El Chapo, 65, is serving a life sentence in a US prison. He was sentenced in 2019 for drug trafficking and money laundering.
100 flights were canceled in Sinaloa, and school closed
In protest against the arrest, gang members attacked a plane preparing to take off. Frightened by the attack, the passengers saved their lives by bending down. The video of this incident is also going viral. The gang members also attacked the Air Force aircraft. The attack caused the cancellation of more than 100 flights in the state of Sinaloa.
Security forces are continuously conducting operations to control the riots. Common people have been appealed to stay in their homes. Schools have been closed across the state.
Ovidio arrested after 6 months of preparation
Ovidio was arrested in the city of Culiacan. Later he was shifted to Mexico City. Mexico's Defense Minister Cresencio Sandoval told that Ovidio was being monitored for the last 6 months. American officials also helped in this.
In fact, in December 2022, the US announced a reward of $ 5 million, or Rs 41.3 crore, to the person giving information about Ovidio and his brothers. Ovidio was also arrested in 2019 but was released after gang members threatened to incite violence.
Ovidio runs 11 drug labs
According to the US State Department, Ovidio and his brothers run 11 methamphetamine labs. 1,300 to 2,200 kg of drugs is produced here every month.
