Kolkata, Feb 19 (IANS) West Bengal Governor K.N. Tripathi Thursday expressed satisfaction over the law and order situation in the state and called Kolkata a safe city for women.
Tripathi also said the implementation of the National Food Security Act was a priority of the Mamata Banerjee government.
"As per published data by the National Crimes Records Bureau, Kolkata is a safe city for women, well behind in recorded crimes compared to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad," Tripathi said in his address to the state assembly.
"The law and order situation in the state has remained peaceful and under control. The response of my government against the social evil of any offence against women wherever it has occurred was swift and immediate," he said.
Pointing to the setting up of 57 new police stations, including 20 women police stations, Tripathi said the government has made all efforts to improve the quality of district and urban policing with greater use of technology, enhanced training and acquisition of physical assets.
"Convictions have been made within a few months of filing charge sheets in several recorded cases all over the state," he said.
He said the Border Security Force and the Sashastra Seema Bal at the Bangladesh and Nepal borders have been asked to heighten vigilance to prevent human trafficking and other border crimes.
Asserting that the implementation of the Food Security Act was a priority, Tripathi said steps were being taken to roll out the project this year.
