According to a report released on February 1, all of Ukraine's nuclear reactors were working and supplying power to the electrical grid. However, six out of 15 nuclear reactors stopped working after the Russian attack, causing a severe power outage in Ukraine. At the same time, nuclear plants are under construction in Kharkiv, Odesa, Crimea, and Cherian. Nuclear analyst James M. Aston at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace pointed out that in general, nuclear plants are not designed as war zones. What is the importance of the zaporizhzhia Plant?
The zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant, located 550 kilometers southeast of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, supplies a quarter of Ukraine's electricity needs. According to the information, Russian forces opened fire on the zaporizhzhia plant on Friday morning, causing a fire there. The plant was constructed between 1984 and 1995. It is the largest nuclear plant in Europe, which is ranked ninth in the world. The plant has a total of six reactors, which supply a total of 5700 MW of electricity. That is, 950 MW of power is supplied from one reactor. If you look at the figures, this power plant supplies electricity to about 4 million homes across Ukraine. In normal times, the plant produces one-fifth of Ukraine's electricity supply and about half of the energy generated from the country's nuclear power facilities.
