Several important financial, banking and administrative rules have come into effect across India from August 1, 2026. The latest changes impact LPG cylinder prices, Tatkal railway ticket booking, Income Tax Return (ITR) filing, banking services, GST compliance and India Post services. These updates are expected to influence household expenses, travel plans, tax compliance and day-to-day financial transactions.
Here's a detailed look at the five major rule changes and their impact on your pocket.
1. LPG Cylinder Prices Revised
Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have announced fresh LPG cylinder prices effective August 1.
Commercial LPG cylinder prices have been reduced in several cities, offering relief to hotels, restaurants and commercial establishments.
Domestic LPG cylinder prices remain unchanged in most parts of the country.
The monthly revision is based on international crude oil prices and exchange rate movements.
The latest price revision could indirectly affect restaurant and food service costs.
2. Indian Railways Introduces New Tatkal Booking Rules
Indian Railways has implemented a new Tatkal ticket booking system to improve transparency and reduce overcrowding.
Key changes include:
Token distribution at reservation counters will begin simultaneously with Tatkal booking.
Passengers will no longer need to stand in separate queues before booking starts.
Aadhaar OTP verification has become mandatory for online Tatkal bookings to prevent misuse, bots and ticket black marketing.
The new system is expected to make the Tatkal booking process smoother and more secure.
3. ITR Filing Deadline Ends; Late Fee Now Applicable
The deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for salaried taxpayers and non-audit cases expired on July 31, 2026.
Taxpayers who failed to file their returns on time may now face:
A late filing fee of up to ₹5,000 under Section 234F of the Income Tax Act.
Applicable for eligible taxpayers filing ITR after the due date.
However, taxpayers filing ITR-3 and ITR-4 whose accounts do not require an audit can still submit returns until August 31, 2026.
4. CKYC 2.0 and Banking Rules Updated
Banks and financial institutions have started implementing the CKYC 2.0 (Central KYC) framework in phases.
Major changes include:
Customers will receive a unique 14-digit CKYC number.
KYC documents such as identity and address proof will not need to be submitted repeatedly across banks, insurance companies and mutual fund houses.
Several banks may also revise credit card reward points, annual fees and service charges during August.
Bank Holidays in August
Banks will remain closed for 14 days in different states during August due to:
Independence Day
Raksha Bandhan
Janmashtami
Sundays
Second and fourth Saturdays
Customers are advised to plan banking transactions accordingly.
5. New GST and Speed Post Rules
GST Update
Businesses must now comply with stricter GST regulations.
From August 1:
'Ship-to GSTIN' details have become mandatory while generating e-way bills.
New e-invoice and e-way bill compliance rules are aimed at improving tax transparency.
