India vs Pakistan Hockey World Cup Today: India Eyes Top-8 Spot After 10-Year Unbeaten Run

Posted on 19th Aug 2026 11:58 am by rohit kumar

The much-anticipated India-Pakistan clash will take place today in the Men's Hockey World Cup. The Pool D encounter is scheduled at Wagner Hockey Stadium at 6:30 PM. India will look to continue its strong record against Pakistan and secure qualification for the next round.

India has remained unbeaten against Pakistan for the last 10 years. The two teams have faced each other 19 times during this period, with India winning 17 matches and two ending in draws. Pakistan's last victory over India came in the 2016 South Asian Games final, when it secured a 1-0 win.

India vs Pakistan: Qualification at Stake

India began its World Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory over Wales, but subsequently suffered a 1-4 defeat against England. With three points from two matches, India currently sits second in Pool D.

A win over Pakistan would take India's tally to six points and secure its place in the next round. Pakistan, meanwhile, needs a victory to keep its campaign alive.

The match therefore carries significant importance for both teams.

India Holds the Edge in World Cup Encounters

India and Pakistan have met five times at the Men's Hockey World Cup. India has won three of those encounters, while Pakistan has won two.

Their most recent World Cup meeting came in 2010 in New Delhi, where India registered an emphatic 4-1 victory.

The rivalry has produced some of the most memorable moments in hockey history, including the 1975 World Cup final.

India Beat Pakistan in the 1975 World Cup Final

The 1975 World Cup final remains one of the most iconic India-Pakistan hockey matches.

India defeated Pakistan 2-1 to win its first and, so far, only Men's Hockey World Cup title. The victory remains a landmark moment in Indian hockey history.

Earlier this year, India also defeated Pakistan twice during the European leg of the FIH Pro League. India won the first encounter 7-1 before edging Pakistan 4-3 in the second match.

India Returns to a Historic Venue

The India-Pakistan match will be played at the Wagner Hockey Stadium, a venue with a special connection to the rivalry.

The two teams met at the same stadium during the 1973 World Cup semi-final. India defeated Pakistan 1-0, with B.P. Govinda scoring the decisive goal in the 62nd minute.

India subsequently reached the final at the same venue but lost to the Netherlands in a penalty shootout.

Harmanpreet Singh Among Tournament's Top Scorers

Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh has been one of the standout performers of the tournament so far. He has scored three goals in two matches, with all three coming from penalty corners.

India will once again rely on Harmanpreet's set-piece expertise against Pakistan. However, the team will also need to improve its open-play finishing after struggling to convert chances against England.
