Cyber security research firm CyberX9 has claimed in its report that the call data records of 206 million (20.6 million) postpaid customers were leaked due to vulnerabilities in the systems of telecom operator company Vodafone-Idea (Vi). As per the report, this included data such as call time, duration of the call, from where the call was made, the full name of the subscriber, address SMS details, and roaming details. However, Vi has denied the claim, saying that there was no data breach. There was a vulnerability issue in billing communication, which has been fixed.
Himanshu Pathak, founder and managing director of CyberX9, said the firm had shared the entire case report with Vi on August 22 via e-mail. Subsequently, on August 24, a company official acknowledged the vulnerability issue. However, Vi later said that the report was false and malicious.
The firm calls Vi's claim absurd
According to the company, regular checks and audits are conducted to strengthen the security infrastructure. To this CyberX9 said that Vi's claim that they have conducted a forensic audit is absurd. Such a detailed audit would take at least a few months. But according to him, he conducts audits every month. How is this possible?
Leaks happening for last two years
According to CyberX9, call logs and other sensitive data of millions of customers are being leaked for the past two years. By now many criminal hackers would have stolen the data. The cyber security firm said that the report has violated the privacy of 300 million (301 million) people of all companies. At the same time, the personal data of five and a half crore (55 million) people who left Vi and showed interest in Vi was at risk.
