After the Russian attack on Ukraine, Indian students had to walk several kilometers before the Poland border. Then the news also started coming that Ukraine Border Police is torturing Indians, in such a situation the Indian Embassy in Poland carried out a mission that was impossible in the event of war.

The Embassy decided to enter the Ukraine border to bring the Indians. During the deteriorating situation and the firing, this task was as impossible as possible. The mission was to penetrate 30 km into Ukraine and evacuate all the Indian students to Poland.

Indian-origin businessman Amit Lath, who led the mission with the Embassy, told Bhaskar that 444 Indian students from Poland were sent to India on Tuesday evening.

Students were taking 4 days to reach the border on foot

The Indian Embassy became active as soon as the war started to evacuate these students. In this mission, the Indo-Polish Chamber of Commerce and Industries (IPCCI) helped to formulate the strategy. To carry out this mission, Indian students walking 30 to 50 kilometers inside the war-torn Ukraine border had to be brought to a safe area of Poland.

It was taking them 4 days to reach on foot. During this, there was a threat of Ukrainian police excesses. On this, the health had also started deteriorating due to spending the night on the way during the cold.

Strategy for Mission Impossible

The Indian community in Poland became active as soon as Russia attacked on 24 February. In association with IPCCI, the Embassy formed 7 teams. Some of them were given the task of expelling the Indians from Ukraine, while some were making arrangements for their stay and food. A special control room was set up. From here the coordination and execution of the entire operation were being monitored.

How to rescue Indian students

To complete the mission, a convoy of 30 buses was dispatched on Monday evening to bring the students coming from Ukraine. These students were on the way to Poland in the western part of Ukraine. Yavoriv, a city in western Ukraine, is 49 km from the Poland border.

Indian students were coming towards Poland on foot from this route. On the way, these people were tortured by the Ukrainian Army and the Border Police. In such a situation, the biggest focus of the Indian Embassy was to carry out the mission quickly.

Mission Obstacles

The biggest challenge was to get in touch with the students and assure them that the Indian government is doing everything possible to get them safe. IPCCI ensured this by talking to its contacts in Ukraine. After this, it was also a big challenge to prepare the bus transporters of Poland to go on this difficult mission. Here again, the effect of IPCCI was used.

how long did it take to complete the mission?

It took 5 to 6 days to complete the mission. Buses from Poland to Ukraine took less time, but they took twice as long to bring back Indians. Actually, due to the refugees coming from Ukraine to Poland, the whole way was jammed. Eventually, about 500 Indians in two batches were safely evacuated to Hotel Presidnski in Rzejo city of Poland.

Medical help was given to all the students here. 5-star arrangement made for accommodation and food. All these students reached India from Poland in the early hours of Wednesday by two Indigo flights.
