Congress leader Rahul Gandhi spoke to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin over the phone to inquire about the Karur stampede and express his condolences. He also spoke with TVK chief Vijay and expressed condolences for the deaths of his party's supporters.

Stalin posted on Instagram about his conversation with Rahul Gandhi. He wrote, "Thank you, my dear brother Rahul Gandhi, for expressing your deep concern over the Karur tragedy and for inquiring seriously about the condition of those undergoing treatment and for information about the steps being taken to save their lives."

Congress sources told news agency PTI that Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, spoke with the Chief Minister about the situation and also called TVK chief Vijay to offer his condolences.

The death toll in the stampede at Vijay's political rally in Karur on September 27 rose to 40 on Sunday, with more than 60 people hospitalized and at least two in critical condition. Following the accident, Vijay-led TVK has demanded a CBI or independent investigation in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. Facing criticism, actor Vijay also announced a compensation of ₹20 lakh each for the families of the victims.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. The state government has announced ₹10 lakh each for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh each for the injured. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has announced ₹1 crore for the families of the deceased, and the BJP has announced ₹1 lakh each.

Karur police have registered a case against TVK officials under several sections, including negligence. Forensic experts have begun investigating the scene. Traders and shopkeepers in Karur closed their establishments as a mark of respect for the deceased. Additionally, several political parties are continuing to gather at the scene.
