He wrote, "Thank you, my dear brother Rahul Gandhi, for expressing your deep concern over the Karur tragedy and for inquiring seriously about the condition of those undergoing treatment and for information about the steps being taken to save their lives."
Congress sources told news agency PTI that Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, spoke with the Chief Minister about the situation and also called TVK chief Vijay to offer his condolences.
The death toll in the stampede at Vijay's political rally in Karur on September 27 rose to 40 on Sunday, with more than 60 people hospitalized and at least two in critical condition. Following the accident, Vijay-led TVK has demanded a CBI or independent investigation in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.
