Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the title for the third time by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final match of IPL 2024 played in Chennai on Sunday. Kolkata performed effectively with both bat and ball in this match and did not give the opposition team a chance to dominate at any time. After KKR's victory, while fans are praising team mentor Gautam Gambhir, captain Shreyas Iyer has a different opinion.
What happened in the match?
Shreyas Iyer-led KKR defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets in the final with the help of Venkatesh Iyer's unbeaten half-century after a strong performance by the bowlers led by Andre Russell. Hyderabad won the toss and decided to bat first, but Kolkata bowlers bowled brilliantly and restricted Hyderabad to 113 runs in 18.3 overs. Chasing the target, Kolkata scored an unbeaten 52 runs with the help of four fours and three sixes from Venkatesh Iyer's 26 balls and two wickets in 10.3 overs with the help of wicketkeeper-batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz's 39 runs with the help of five fours and two sixes from 32 balls. But won by scoring 114 runs. Kolkata had earlier won its last title by defeating Punjab Kings in the 2014 season and now after 10 years, the team again captured the trophy.
'Success is achieved not by one person, but by the collective effort of the team'
After winning the IPL title, KKR captain Shreyas praised the team and also congratulated Hyderabad for a great season. Shreyas said we expected similar performance from the players. It is very difficult for me to describe this feeling. We were lucky that we got a chance to bowl first. It seemed as if everything was going in our favor. However, I would also like to congratulate Sunrisers who played brilliantly throughout the tournament. No one person has brought us here, rather we have achieved success due to the collective efforts of the team.
'Young players can learn from Starc'
Mitchell Starc, the most expensive player in IPL history, was facing criticism even after half the season because he was not performing as per expectations. However, the way Starc performed in Qualifier-1 and the final, stunned everyone. Starc took three wickets against Hyderabad in Qualifier-1, while he took two wickets in the title match. Shreyas said about Starc, if we talk about Starc, he is an amazing person outside the field. By seeing his working style, young players can learn a lot from him.
