Like Uttar Pradesh, now Madhya Pradesh will have a law against Love Jihad. The BJP-led Shivraj government of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday approved the 'Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Ordinance-2020' to enact strict laws on the lines of Uttar Pradesh against 'Love Jihad'. Through this ordinance, a provision of a maximum of 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to one lakh rupees has been made in the case of marriage and any other fraudulent conversion.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan told reporters on Monday night, "We could not bring all the bills including the Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Bill-2020 due to the adjournment of the assembly session, yesterday in a special cabinet meeting on Tuesday (today). Will implement them through ordinance. He said, "The laws will come into force with immediate effect after the cabinet meeting."

Significantly, the cabinet of the Madhya Pradesh government approved the 'Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Bill-2020' on 26 December to enact a strict law against alleged 'love jihad'. The bill provides for imprisonment for a maximum period of 10 years and a fine of up to one lakh rupees in case of marriage and any other fraudulent conversion.

The bill was to be introduced and passed in the three-day session of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly starting on December 28, but the session has been adjourned on Sunday due to the current status of Kovid-19. So now the government is bringing the ordinance. This ordinance is in some ways similar to the 'Uttar Pradesh Law Against Religion Prohibition Ordinance-2020' notified by the BJP-led government of Uttar Pradesh last month, as it also has a provision of a maximum sentence of 10 years for forcible conversion.

After the promulgation of this ordinance, no person will be able to convert or attempt to convert another in the name of inducement, intimidation and forced marriage, or other fraudulent ways, directly or indirectly. After this, no person will be able to conspire for conversion.
