Union Minister Narayan Rane's son and BJP MLA from Maharashtra Nitesh Rane have withdrawn his anticipatory bail plea in connection with an alleged attempt to murder case registered against him in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district. He had earlier approached the Bombay High Court in this matter. However, now they have decided to withdraw the petition. Rane's counsel said that his client would surrender before the police in the matter and cooperate in the investigation process.
The sessions court in Sindhudurg district had last week rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Kankavali MLA Nitesh Rane. Only then did he reach the Bombay High Court for bail. However, here too he was disappointed. The MLA had claimed in his petition that he was falsely implicated in the attempt to murder due to political enmity.
What did the lawyer say about withdrawing the bail application?
Nitesh's lawyer in the Bombay High Court, Satish Manshinde, said his client wanted to surrender and join the investigation, with five days left for the stay on his arrest. A single bench of Justice CV Bhadang of the High Court accepted Rane's demand to withdraw his bail plea. Significantly, on January 27, the Supreme Court had stayed the arrest of Nitesh for 10 days.
What is the case registered against Nitesh Rane?
The BJP MLA claims that the case was registered against him so that he could not participate in the Sindhudurg District Central Cooperative Bank elections on December 30. An FIR was registered against Nitesh Rane and others under sections 307 (murder attempt), 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Kankavli police station last December.
The case pertains to the alleged attack on local Shiv Sena worker Santosh Parab during the campaigning for bank elections. However, in a setback to Shiv Sena, the Narayan Rane-led panel has won the Sindhudurg District Central Cooperative Bank election. Nitesh's petition claimed that he was being framed and that the case against him and his father was "motivated by political vendetta or rivalry at the behest of the ruling system".
