Former captain MS Dhoni, who led India to victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, is confident that Team India will successfully defend its title in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Speaking at a public event with Jatin Sapru, Dhoni said that the Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, is the most complete and powerful team in the tournament. According to him, India has all the necessary resources to retain the title. Talking about the team's strength, Dhoni said, "Team India is one of the strongest teams in the tournament. It has everything that a good team needs."

Experience and Role Clarity: The Strengths

Dhoni believes that the experience of the players and the clarity of their roles set this Indian team apart from the others. In a short format like T20, pressure situations arise frequently, and teams often face challenging circumstances. In such situations, experienced players are crucial for the team's success. He said, "This team has experience. Especially in this format, the players have played under pressure for a long time. Every player knows their role well and has faced similar situations before."

Dhoni's Warning: Beware of the Dew

While Dhoni named India as a strong contender for the title, he also issued an important warning. According to him, dew is a factor that can change the course of any match. Dhoni clearly stated, "The thing that worries me is the dew. I don't like dew at all. It changes a lot in the game. Even during my playing days, dew was one of the most frightening things because then the toss becomes extremely important."

India's Dominance in Neutral Conditions

Dhoni believes that if the conditions are balanced, India will emerge victorious in most matches. He confidently said, "If we play 10 matches against the best teams in the world and the conditions are neutral, India will win most of them."

What challenges did Dhoni mention? Dhoni further said, "The only problem is when one of your team's players is having an off day and a player from the opposing team is having a great day. This happens many times in T20 cricket. We'll just have to see if it happens in the league stage or the knockout stage. That's when we'll need prayers."

Dhoni added, "Everyone, including the team management, hopes that no player from the selected team gets injured.  They should all perform their assigned roles well. If that happens, and I don't want to jinx it, but India will be the most dangerous and strongest team."

Statistics also support India

Team India's recent performance strengthens Dhoni's confidence. After winning the T20 World Cup in 2024, India has not lost a single bilateral series or tournament. During this period, India has won 27 out of 32 matches. Since August 2023, India has registered 49 wins in 63 T20 matches. India is currently ranked number one in the ICC Men's T20 rankings. Abhishek Sharma is the number one T20 batsman, while Varun Chakravarthy remains the top T20 bowler.

A golden opportunity to make history

India is entering the 2026 T20 World Cup as both the host and the defending champion. So far, no host team has won the T20 World Cup, nor has any men's team successfully defended the title. Therefore, Suryakumar Yadav's team has a great opportunity to make history. They also have the chance to become the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times.
