According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), large parts of the country witnessed a cold wave, dense fog, and a sharp drop in temperature on January 1, 2026.
The IMD reported that Mumbai received light rain early in the morning on the first day of the new year, 2026. In Delhi, New Year's Eve was the coldest December day in the last six years. A cold wave also swept across Rajasthan. Schools were closed in Guwahati, Assam, due to the intense cold.
Delhi's Coldest Day
According to the India Meteorological Department, Wednesday, December 31, was the coldest December day in the last six years in the national capital, Delhi. The department stated that the temperature in Delhi on December 31, 2025, was significantly below normal.
Weather officials explained that such cold conditions occur when both day and night temperatures are considerably below average, and according to the IMD, this trend is expected to continue until the beginning of January. Visibility was also reduced in several parts of the city in the evening due to light fog, affecting travel conditions. According to the department, some parts of Delhi may experience light rain today.
Continuous Drop in Temperature in Jharkhand
Eastern India is also currently in the grip of a severe cold wave. According to the latest IMD bulletin, a dense fog warning has been issued for Jharkhand, leading to dangerously low visibility in several districts, while temperatures in some areas dropped to around 4 degrees Celsius.
Schools Closed in Guwahati
The northeastern parts of the country are also experiencing a significant drop in temperature. Due to the sudden drop in temperature, authorities ordered schools to be closed for a week to protect the health of the children. According to the news agency PTI, cloudy skies, intermittent drizzle, and cold winds made living conditions difficult, forcing people to light fires and wear heavy winter clothing.

Dense to very dense fog is also expected in large parts of northern, western, and eastern Rajasthan between January 1 and 3, which may affect road and rail traffic.
