
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has constituted a joint panel to submit a factual report on air pollution caused by the transportation of fly ash from various thermal power stations in Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh and Sonbhadra regions of Uttar Pradesh. Fly ash is a byproduct of coal-based power stations.
The NGT was hearing a plea that claimed that the authorities responsible for monitoring and supervising the transportation of fly ash were not following the provisions of the law and the guidelines of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Judicial Member Justice Sudhir Agarwal and Expert Member A.K. Senthil Vel constituted a joint panel, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, CPCB, and State Pollution Control Boards. The green panel said, the report will highlight the compliance of provisions related to the transportation of fly ash as per the Singrauli and Sonbhadra Action Plan, to maintain the environmental quality of this critically polluted area.
