New Delhi, Business Desk. As soon as the lockdown of the third phase starts with some discounts, the prices of petrol and diesel have started to rise in the major metros of the country. On Monday, petrol and diesel prices were increased by 3 rupees 26 paise and 2 rupees 51 paise in diesel in Chennai and now on Tuesday, the national capital Delhi has also recorded a sharp increase in the prices of petrol and diesel. In Delhi, the price of petrol has increased by Rs 1.67 per liter on Tuesday. Due to which the price of one liter of petrol in Delhi has been increased to Rs 71.26 per liter. At the same time, the price of diesel in Delhi has increased by Rs 7.10 per liter. With this boom, diesel is now being sold in Delhi at Rs 69.39 per liter.
This increase in the prices of petrol and diesel has been observed due to increase in VAT by the Delhi government. VAT on petrol in Delhi has been increased from 27 percent to 30 percent. Whereas VAT on diesel has almost doubled. It was earlier 16.75 percent, which has now been reduced to 30 percent. The Delhi government has suffered a huge loss in revenue due to the lockdown. Therefore, the government wants to increase its revenue by increasing VAT on petrol and diesel.
The nationwide lockdown has been extended for the third time since Monday. The lockdown has been extended to May 17 for two weeks. However, there are also many exemptions to lockdown according to red, orange and green zones. Due to these discounts, the consumption of petrol and diesel in the country is likely to increase. In view of the increase in consumption, many state governments are increasing VAT on petrol and diesel. Earlier, petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged in many big metros of the country for about 50 days.
