The journey of passengers traveling between Delhi and Meerut is going to be easy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate India's first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) on Friday (October 20). The PM will flag off the first rapid rail running from Delhi NCR to Ghaziabad and Meerut under the RRTS corridor. On the lines of Vande Bharat, it has been named Namo Bharat Train.

Let us know what is the rapid rail project which is to be inaugurated. How many phases are there in this project? What will change about the rapid rail running between Delhi and Meerut? After all, what is rapid rail? What special features does it have? Let us understand...

What is the rapid rail project to be inaugurated?

The country's first RapidX train corridor will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Sahibabad on October 20. In the first phase, the operation of trains on the 17 km long priority section from Sahibabad to Duhai will start after the Prime Minister gives the green signal.

A trial run of the rapid rail also took place before the inauguration. The Rapid Rail achieved a speed figure of more than 152 kilometers per hour. Rail service will start the next day after PM's inauguration.

How many phases are there in this project?

The Rapid Rail is to be run under the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) project. NCRTC is a joint sector company of the Government of India, the states of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Its mandate is to implement the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) in the National Capital Region to enable balanced and sustainable urban growth through better connectivity and accessibility between these regions.

Why was there a need for rapid rail?

The idea of an integrated commuter rail network to connect the National Capital Region and Delhi was proposed in the Study Commission of Indian Railways in 1998–99. The study identified the possibility of an RRTS network that would provide connectivity using such fast local trains. Later the National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB) recommended high-speed rail transit services to connect the cities of the National Capital Region through eight RRTS corridors.

In this way, NCRTC was formed which became the nodal body for setting up the multi-modal transport system in the National Capital Region. Work on the NCRTC project began in June 2019. NCRTC is ready to start commercial operation of Rapidex services within four years. The NCRTC team has also processed the remaining part of the project expeditiously. It can operationalize the entire corridor along with metro services in Meerut within the scheduled timeline of June 2025.

Trains will run on these five routes

This corridor has been planned under the Rapid X Project, the management of which will be the responsibility of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation. In the first section, the rapid rail will run between Sahibabad and Duhai depot. This route is 17 kilometers long. There will be five stations on this route. In which there are Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai and Duhai depots.

What will be the facilities of Rapid Rail?

NCRTC claims that this will be India's first such train system, in which the train will run at a speed of 160 km per hour. Passengers will also be able to buy tickets through mobile and card. A stretcher has been arranged in the last compartment of the rail coach. If a patient is referred from Meerut to Delhi, then a separate coach is arranged so that the patient can be transported at a lower cost. A separate seat has been prepared for the disabled on this train.

The seats of this train have been made very comfortable. The train has adjustable chairs and special arrangements have also been made for standing passengers. The train will also have a WiFi facility and a mobile USB charger.

What will be the fare for Rapid Rail?

According to DPR estimates, the fare on the train will be around Rs 2 to 3 per km. There will be Rapid Line connectivity on seven lines of Delhi Metro. It will be connected to Munirka, INA, and Aerocity. According to the RRTS project, 24 stations will be built along the entire corridor. The agency estimates that when the project is completed in 2025, eight lakh passengers will be able to travel through it every day.

Preparation to run 30 rapid trains

It will take one hour to reach Meerut from Delhi. After the construction of the entire route between Delhi and Meerut, a total of 30 rapid trains are ready to run. The Operation and Command Control Center of the Rapid Rail Corridor is being prepared in Duhai Yard, Ghaziabad.

How easy will the journey be?

The RRTS network will provide rapid and world-class mobility to commuters in the region at a high speed of 160 km/h every 5-10 minutes. For passengers traveling without stopping, such technology will be used which will cover the distance of 100 kilometers within 45-50 minutes.

Attention to the needs of passengers

Keeping in mind the needs of every type of passenger on this network, it will be ensured that they can reach their destination conveniently. This network will be seamlessly integrated with Indian Railways, interstate bus stands, airports, and Delhi Metro so that passengers can move from one mode to another without any hindrance.
