Robin Hood Army spreads its wings to Karachi

New Delhi, Feb 14 (IANS) After successfully feeding homeless and destitutes across a few Indian cities, the Robin Hood Army (RHA) is launching its Karachi arm Sunday when India Pakistan will lock horns at the World Cup 2015 in Adelaide.

The RHA, a collective effort of two friends who have collaborated with different restaurants and eateries in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Bangalore to "serve the poor and destitute", have found a "genuine" partner in Karchi-based Sarah Afridi to start its Pakistan chapter.

"The inequalities are similar in both India and Pakistan. So, ever since the Peshawar (school) attack, we have been thinking of doing something together and reach out to people who are needy," Neel Ghose, one of those behind the initiative, told IANS.

That happened when they found a reliable partner in Afridi, who was impressed with RHA's philanthropic activity. The two have been friends since their London School of Economics days and were in constant touch.

"I have been following RHA's Facebook page and I was amazed to see how this initiative is catching up in India, especially among youngsters. So, I just got

interested and thought why not start a Karachi arm," Afridi told IANS on the phone from Karachi.

So the duo has chosen an epic day – the India-Pakistan World Cup match on Sunday – to start this new chapter.

Post the match, Afridi, along with her family members would go out and distribute food to the homeless.

Unlike Ghose, who has tied up with various eateries that give them "leftovers" and even cook fresh meals for the endeavour, Afridi is shelling out her own money to make these arrangements till the Karachi chapter picks up steam.

"We first need to prove our credibility and for that we need to show some work. For this Sunday, I have already ordered some food and hopefully once the word spreads,

people would start contributing and participating," Afridi explained.

After the Karachi chapter, Ghose disclosed that they are in talks with a Lahore couple who would be starting a chapter there in March.
