Bank customers planning urgent work at their branch should take note of the latest bank strike and holiday schedule. Bank employees across the country have called for a nationwide strike on Friday, September 11, which will be followed by the second Saturday and Sunday holidays. In some states, banks will also remain closed on Monday, September 14, due to Ganesh Chaturthi.
As a result, customers in some parts of the country could face disruption in branch banking services for three consecutive days, with a fourth day of closure in states observing the September 14 holiday.
Why Are Bank Employees Going on Strike?
Bank unions have called the one-day nationwide strike to press for several pending demands. One of the key demands is the implementation of a five-day banking work week.
The strike has been announced after discussions failed to produce a concrete resolution on the employees' demands. Customers who need to visit a bank branch for urgent work are therefore advised to plan their transactions accordingly.
Bank Holiday Schedule: September 11 to 14
Here is the schedule that customers need to know:
September 11, Friday: Nationwide bank strike
September 12, Saturday: Second Saturday bank holiday
September 13, Sunday: Weekly holiday
September 14, Monday: Bank holiday in some states on account of Ganesh Chaturthi
Therefore, while September 11 to 13 will create a three-day disruption, the closure extends to four consecutive days only in states where September 14 is a bank holiday.
Which Banking Services Will Be Affected?
The strike is expected to have the biggest impact on physical bank branches. Customers may face difficulties with services that require branch visits, including:
Cash deposits and withdrawals at bank counters
Cheque-related services and clearing
Account-related branch work
Demand drafts and other counter-based services
Other in-person banking transactions
Customers with urgent branch-related work should consider completing it before the strike and weekend holidays, where possible.
Will UPI, ATM and Online Banking Work?
The strike primarily affects branch operations. Digital banking services such as UPI, mobile banking and internet banking are generally expected to remain available, although customers should be aware that certain transactions can still face delays depending on the banking channel.
ATMs are also expected to remain operational, subject to cash availability and technical issues.
Bank Strike 2026: What Should Customers Do?
Customers who have urgent banking work should avoid waiting until the strike begins. Cash requirements, cheque deposits and other branch-dependent services should preferably be completed in advance.
For digital transactions, customers can continue using UPI, internet banking and mobile banking wherever available.
Bank Holiday September 2026: Key Takeaway
The September 11 bank strike, followed by the second Saturday and Sunday holidays, could disrupt branch banking services for three consecutive days across the country. The closure may extend to September 14 in some states because of Ganesh Chaturthi.
Customers should therefore check their state-wise bank holiday calendar before visiting a branch and use digital banking channels for routine transactions where possible.
