Shreyas Iyer Assures Vaibhav Suryavanshi of Opportunity After India-West Indies Series Draw

Posted on 19th Oct 2026 02:55 pm by rohit kumar

India captain Shreyas Iyer has assured young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi that he will get an opportunity to represent the national team, but has stressed that he may have to wait for his turn. Suryavanshi did not feature in India’s five-match T20I series against the West Indies, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Speaking after the rain-affected fifth T20I in Bengaluru on Saturday, Iyer was asked why the young batter had not been included in the playing XI. The India captain explained that the team already had two established openers and that he had discussed the situation with Suryavanshi.

“I keep telling him that he will get his chance. Sometimes, you have to wait. We have two excellent openers, and that is what we have been discussing with Vaibhav,” Iyer said.

The comments offer a glimpse into India’s selection considerations as the team balances opportunities for emerging players with the need to maintain a settled combination.

Why Did Vaibhav Suryavanshi Not Play Against West Indies?

Vaibhav Suryavanshi was not included in India’s playing XI during the five-match T20I series against the West Indies. According to Iyer, the presence of two established opening batters was a key consideration in the team’s selection discussions.

The young batter has attracted considerable attention for his aggressive approach and performances in domestic and franchise cricket. His potential inclusion in the senior national side has generated interest among fans, but international opportunities depend on team balance, available positions and the management’s plans.

Iyer’s message was that Suryavanshi remains in the conversation and will get his opportunity when the circumstances allow. For the young batter, the next step will be to remain prepared and make the most of his chance when it arrives.

Shreyas Iyer Admits Better Bowling Could Have Changed Series Result

Iyer also reflected on India’s overall performance in the T20I series, admitting that improved bowling in the second and fourth matches could have produced a different outcome.

The India captain acknowledged the quality of the West Indies batting line-up and specifically praised captain Shai Hope for his performances throughout the series.

“Credit must be given where it is due; they batted well,” Iyer said, praising the way Hope performed with the bat.

West Indies produced several strong batting displays during the series, putting pressure on India’s bowlers. Iyer’s comments highlighted the importance of executing plans consistently, particularly against an opposition capable of scoring quickly and building match-winning totals.

The 2-2 result reflected a closely contested series in which both teams had their moments. India and the West Indies each won two matches before rain prevented a result in the fifth and final T20I.

Shai Hope Says West Indies Were Close to Winning the Series in India

West Indies captain Shai Hope said his side had come close to securing a series victory in India, which would have represented a significant achievement for the team.

Hope highlighted the progress made by the squad and said success should not be measured only by whether a team wins a series. He also praised the contributions of different players who took responsibility at important stages of the contest.

Hope’s batting was one of the major talking points of the series. He finished as the leading run-scorer, making 261 runs across four innings, and was named Player of the Series. His performances played a major role in keeping the West Indies competitive against India.

The visitors ultimately missed out on a series win after the final match was abandoned, but their performances offered encouragement ahead of future international assignments.

India vs West Indies 5th T20I: What Happened in Bengaluru?

The fifth T20I at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru ended in a no-result after persistent rain disrupted the contest.

The toss, originally scheduled for 6:30 pm, was delayed until 9 pm because of the weather. West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl, and the match was reduced to nine overs per side.

India made an aggressive start and reached 118/5 in 7.4 overs before rain returned and prevented further play. With insufficient time to complete the match, officials abandoned the contest.

The result left the five-match series level at 2-2, with India and the West Indies sharing the honours. The rain-affected finish brought an anticlimactic end to a competitive series that featured several high-scoring encounters.

What’s Next for India?

The series has given India useful insights into its batting combinations and bowling execution, while also keeping questions about opportunities for emerging players in focus.

For Suryavanshi, Iyer’s assurance will keep attention on when he might receive his senior international opportunity. However, his selection will depend on the team’s requirements and the available opening slots.

India will also look to address the bowling concerns highlighted by Iyer as it prepares for its upcoming international assignments. The 2-2 result against the West Indies underlined the need for consistency across all departments, particularly in close contests.

For now, Suryavanshi’s wait continues—but Iyer has made clear that an opportunity could come when the time is right.
