At least 20 people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident. A total of eight people, including two children, were burnt to death after a dozen houses were allegedly torched in Bogtui village of Rampurhat in the early hours of Tuesday. A petrol bomb was attacked and set on fire

After the murder of the Trinamool Congress leader, around a dozen houses were allegedly torched with petrol bombs in Bogatui village on the outskirts of Rampurhat town. It is said that some people set fire to houses in retaliation for the murder of their leader.

Security has been tightened in Rampurhat to avoid any untoward incident during the scheduled visit of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. A senior police official said CCTVs have been installed around the helipad, where the chief minister's helicopter will land.

Before leaving for Bogatui village, Mamata Banerjee will hold a meeting with Director General of Police Manoj Malviya and several other senior police officers. Later she may also visit Rampurhat hospital to meet the injured.

Congress Bengal unit chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and a five-member central team of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will also visit Bogtui village. The Chief Minister has said that strict action will be taken against the culprits, irrespective of the political party they belong to. Terming these killings as a heinous crime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the culprits should not be forgiven.

The West Bengal government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Additional Director General of Police (CID) Gyanwant Singh to probe the incident. The Union Home Ministry has sought a detailed report on the incident from the state government.
