Agriculture expert Anil Ghanwat has termed the decision of the Central Government to withdraw all three controversial agriculture laws as unfortunate. Ghanvat, a member of the Supreme Court who constituted a committee on agricultural laws, said farmers had been demanding agricultural reforms for 40 years. Taking back the law is not a good move.
Ghanvat said that the present farming system is not proper and adequate. He said that I think that this government has the will to reform agriculture. There was no political will in the previous government. I hope that another committee will be formed involving the opposition and farmer leaders of all the states to consider the three agricultural laws.
Will issue report after looking at legal aspects
Ghanvat said that on the question of releasing the report of the committee constituted by the Supreme Court on the disputed laws, Ghanvat said that they will decide after looking at the legal aspects. He claimed that two other members of the committee have empowered him to decide.
The report was submitted to the Supreme Court on March 19
The committee had submitted its report to the Supreme Court on March 19 after studying all the three agricultural laws and after consulting the parties concerned. The report has not been made public since then. Ghanwat had written a letter to the Chief Justice on September 1, urging him to release it among the public, whose recommendations would help in ending the current farmers' agitation.
The two other members of the committee constituted by the Supreme Court are Ashok Gulati, former chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices, and agricultural economist Pramod Kumar Joshi. Comments from these two are yet to be received. PM Narendra Modi has announced the withdrawal of all three agricultural laws on Guru Parv after a long farmers' agitation. A proposal related to these will be brought in the winter session of Parliament.
