Giving a big relief to the farmers, the central government has extended the wheat procurement deadline to 31 May. Union Food Minister Piyush Goyal announced this while tweeting a copy of the order. Now farmers have got 15 more days to sell wheat at MSP. Due to favorable weather this year, the yield of the Rabi crop has been good. But in many parts of the country, the farmers were upset for a few days due to not being able to sell their crops by the stipulated time limit, despite the tremendous yield of wheat. According to the already fixed deadline, today was the last date for wheat procurement.
The letter issued by the Secretary of, the Union Food Ministry has been sent to the government of wheat-producing states like Bihar, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. In such a situation, crores of farmers of these states have now got 15 more days to sell wheat. It is worth noting that even before this order of the Central Government, the time limit for wheat procurement was extended in some other states including Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana. This year the minimum support price of wheat has been fixed at Rs 2015 per quintal. At this price, now crores of farmers of the country will be able to sell wheat till May 31.
Earlier, giving relief to the farmers who are facing the problem of wheat crop failure due to the early onset of summer, the central government had decided to relax the rules for the purchase of shrunken wheat grains in Punjab and Haryana. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had last month demanded the central government to relax the purchase of shrunken wheat grains from the state. Also, there should not be any cut in the price. While relaxing the rules of wheat procurement, the Center has given a discount of up to 18 percent without any reduction in the prices. The current limit is 6 percent.
Earlier, the central government had taken a big decision on Saturday to handle the ever-increasing wheat prices internationally and domestically. Under this, the export of all types of wheat was banned with immediate effect. This step was taken keeping in view the food security of the country.
