Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the program organized on World Environment Day through video conferencing. Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar, Union Petroleum Transport Minister Dharmendra Pradhan were present in the program. During this, the PM described ethanol as the priority of the process of the 21st century. The theme of this year's event is Promoting Biofuels for a Better Environment. Before his address, the Prime Minister also spoke to the farmers of different states of the country on ethanol.

During the event, the Prime Minister released the report of the Expert Committee on the Roadmap for Ethanol Blending in India during 2020-2025. The PM also launched a pilot project of E100 distribution stations at three locations in Pune. The event is jointly organized by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.

PM Modi said that 7-8 years ago discussion on ethanol was rare in India, but now ethanol has become a part of India's 21st-century priorities. It is helping the environment as well as the lives of farmers. He said that we have resolved to complete 20 percent ethanol blending in petrol by 2025. Till 2014, on average only 1-1.5 percent ethanol was being blended and today it has reached around 8.5 percent.

The PM said India is also aware of the challenges that are being faced due to climate change and are also working actively. He said that in 6-7 years our capacity for renewable energy has increased by more than 250 percent. India is today in the top-5 countries of the world in terms of installed renewable energy capacity. In this also, the capacity of solar energy has been increased by about 15 times in the last 6 years.

To celebrate World Environment Day, the Government of India is issuing an E-20 notification directing oil companies to sell 20 percent ethanol blended petrol with effect from April 1, 2023. These efforts will provide a timeline for making blended fuels available across the country. It will also help in increasing the consumption of ethanol in ethanol-producing states and adjoining areas before the year 2025.
