China Military Drill: China has once again threatened to attack Taiwan on Wednesday. At the same time, foreign leaders negotiating with the self-governing island have been warned that they are 'playing with fire'. A spokesman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office said the country was committed to "safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity" and "destroying plans for Taiwan independence" in the new year. The spokesman said Taiwan was separated from mainland China in 1949.

Foreign countries are provocation

"The malicious support for Taiwan independence among anti-China elements in some foreign countries is a deliberate provocation," Ma Shi Huang told a biweekly news conference. He further said, “Taiwan is viewed by China as a Chinese territory, which should be brought under Beijing's control by force if necessary. We call on relevant countries to stop sending wrong signals to separatist forces for Taiwan's independence.

Many foreign leaders visited Taiwan

Foreign politicians have made visits to Taiwan in recent months. This includes the then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and several politicians from the European Union. Meanwhile, Taiwan's military is holding military drills ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday this month. Its purpose is to reassure the public about its ability to counter threats from China. "The most important thing is to protect our airspace and maintain national security," Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Wu Bong-Yeung told reporters at Hsinchu Air Base, south of the capital Taipei.

Visit of parliamentarians from Germany and Lithuania

This war exercise of Taiwan is being done at a time when German and Lithuanian parliamentarians are visiting. China is particularly angry with the Baltic state of Lithuania for strengthening its ties with Taiwan.

China sends ships toward Taiwan

Explain that Beijing sends airplanes and warships toward Taiwan almost daily. They often cross the center line of the 160 km Taiwan Strait dividing the two sides. In late December, China sent a record 71 aircraft and seven ships to Taiwan. This was the biggest such exercise in the year 2022.
