India Women completed a historic campaign by defeating Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 final and winning the continental title for a record eighth time. However, the celebrations were overshadowed by a controversy during the trophy presentation after the Indian team declined to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

 

The trophy presentation was subsequently delayed, with the Indian team not taking part in the ceremony under those circumstances. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia later confirmed that the board had informed the ACC before the final about its position regarding the presentation.

 

Why Did India Refuse to Accept the Trophy From Mohsin Naqvi?

 

The development followed a similar episode involving the Indian men’s team at the 2025 Asia Cup, when India also declined to receive the trophy from Naqvi.

 

According to reports, the BCCI had already communicated its position to the ACC before the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup final. The board proposed alternative arrangements for the presentation, including having ACC Deputy Chairman Khalid Al Zarooni present the trophy or having a representative of the winning board hand over the silverware.

 

Those alternatives were not accepted, and the Indian women’s team ultimately did not participate in the trophy presentation involving Naqvi.

 

Amol Muzumdar Backs BCCI Decision

 

India women’s head coach Amol Muzumdar backed the BCCI’s position after the match.

 

Muzumdar said the decision was taken by the BCCI and that the team stood united behind it. He stressed that India had won the championship and that the team’s focus would now shift to the Asian Games.

 

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also described the decision as a conscious one taken after considering all relevant circumstances.

 

Fans Chant ‘Trophy Chor’ During Trophy Controversy

 

The presentation controversy also generated a strong reaction inside the Dubai stadium. Reports said some Indian fans chanted “Trophy Chor” during the episode involving Naqvi.

 

The incident quickly became one of the biggest talking points surrounding India’s eighth Women’s Asia Cup triumph.

 

Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana Create History

 

While the trophy presentation dominated the headlines after the match, Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana had already produced one of the biggest records of the tournament.

 

The Indian opening pair added 129 runs for the first wicket against Sri Lanka. It became the highest opening partnership in Women’s T20 Asia Cup history, surpassing the previous record of 128 runs held by Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma.

 

Shafali smashed 68 runs from 39 balls, including nine fours and two sixes, while Mandhana contributed 59 from 39 balls with five fours and three sixes.

 

The pair have now registered six century partnerships in Women’s T20Is, joint-most by a pair in the format.

 

Shafali Smashes Fastest Asia Cup Fifty

 

Shafali Verma also produced one of the fastest knocks in Women’s Asia Cup history. She reached her half-century in just 24 balls, making it the fastest fifty in the tournament’s history.

 

Her aggressive batting gave India a flying start and laid the foundation for a total of 183/5 in the final.

 

India Hit 32 Sixes in the Tournament

 

India’s dominance was not limited to the final. The team also topped the six-hitting charts throughout the tournament.

 

India smashed 32 sixes during the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup, 10 more than all the other teams combined, underlining the attacking nature of their batting campaign.

 

Sri Lanka Collapse as Indian Spinners Take Charge

 

Sri Lanka needed 184 runs to win the final but were eventually bowled out for 111.

 

India’s spin attack once again proved decisive. Shree Charani took 4/20, while Deepti Sharma claimed 3/19 as Sri Lanka’s chase fell apart.

 

Captain Chamari Athapaththu top-scored for Sri Lanka with 36, but the rest of the batting lineup struggled against India’s disciplined bowling attack.

 

India Win Record Eighth Women’s Asia Cup Title

 

India’s 72-run victory secured their eighth Women’s Asia Cup title and extended their remarkable record in the tournament.

 

The triumph also allowed India to avenge their defeat to Sri Lanka in the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup final.

 

India’s latest victory was therefore memorable for two reasons: a record eighth continental title on the field and a controversial trophy presentation off it.
