The election of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor of MCD in Delhi could not be held on Friday. The House was adjourned after the heavy uproar. Now Aam Aadmi Party and BJP have come to the streets and are protesting against each other. AAP workers are protesting outside the office of LG VK Saxena. AAP MLA Atishi has demanded that the BJP and Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena state in writing that the nominated members will not vote.
At the same time, BJP workers are protesting at Rajghat. They say that the AAP councilors have abused the female presiding officer. A chair is thrown at him. BJP has demanded from LG that the strictest legal action should be taken against such AAP leaders.
A scuffle between AAP and BJP councilors in the House
The swearing-in of the councilors was to begin at 11 am on Friday, but as soon as the pro-tem speaker first started administering the oath to the nominated members, the members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) started protesting. Due to this BJP councilors also started raising slogans against him. There was a push and a scuffle between the two sides. AAP councilors climbed on the seat of the pro tem speaker. During this, some councilors were seen lifting the chair and slamming it. Some fell due to the shock. Some got hurt.
Now know... where the controversy starts
LG appoints BJP corporator Satya Sharma as pro tem speaker for the mayoral election. Earlier, AAP had proposed the name of Mukesh Goyal. AAP objected to Satya's name. After this, as soon as Protem Speaker Satya started administering oaths to the nominated members of LG, AAP started protesting and shouting slogans.
The Aam Aadmi Party says that the nominated members are not sworn in first, but the BJP is changing the tradition. BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi said that AAP leaders are not aware of the rules. That's why they are creating a ruckus. Why fear when they are in majority? You MPs do the same thing in the Rajya Sabha.
On the other hand, Congress decided not to participate in the mayoral election. AAP MLA Atishi has accused the Congress of favoring the BJP after she decided not to contest the polls. 273 members will vote in the Mayor's election. A figure of 133 is needed for a majority. AAP has 150 votes while BJP has 113 votes.
