IND vs ENG: 'The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward..', coach Gambhir's statement on the Indian team's approach in T20

India defeated England by 150 runs in the fifth and final T20 to win the series 4-1. This was Team India's third series win under Gautam Gambhir's supervision. After the fifth T20, coach Gambhir praised his players and said that the Indian team's approach in T20 is 'the more the risk, the bigger the reward'. Team India has won by implementing this strategy. Gambhir said that no matter what the situation, India will continue to play aggressive cricket in T20 in the future. India was in a difficult situation at one point in the fourth T20 in Pune. England's Saqib Mahmood put Team India in trouble by taking three maiden wickets in the second over of the innings. However, Team India made a tremendous comeback and won the series.

 

Gambhir said, 'We want to play this kind of T20 cricket. We do not want to be afraid of losing cricket matches. We want to play high-risk, high-reward cricket and this team has adopted that ideology, and that policy well. I think the ideology of this T20 team is based on selflessness and fearlessness. I think these players have done that day and night in the last six months.'

 

The Indian coach said, 'We want to reach 250-260 runs consistently. In trying to do that, there will be matches where we will get bowled out for 120-130 runs, but that's T20 cricket. And unless you play that high-risk cricket, you won't get big rewards either. Most importantly, I think we are on the right track. In those big tournaments, we still want to continue playing like this and we don't want to have the fear of losing anything.'

 

One of the main reasons behind India's success was England's inability to read Varun Chakravarthy's spin. The Indian mystery spinner remained an unsolved puzzle for the English batsmen. He finished the series with 14 wickets at an average of 9.85 and an economy rate of 7.66. He was also named Player of the Series. Praising Varun, Gambhir said, 'His transition from IPL to international T20 cricket has been fantastic. And this series was probably also a benchmark for him because England is a great team. They have some great cricketers and the kind of pitches we played on, I think they were great batting wickets. However, the way Varun has bowled those tough overs is phenomenal.'
