The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken significant action against Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag. Riyan has been fined 25 percent of his match fee, and one demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record for a Level 1 breach of the IPL Code of Conduct. Riyan committed the breach during the 40th match of IPL 2026 between Rajasthan and Punjab Kings, prompting the disciplinary action taken against him.
What is the incident?
During the match played against Punjab Kings in New Chandigarh, he was caught on camera vaping inside the dressing room.
This video quickly went viral on social media. At the time, Rajasthan was chasing a target of 223 runs.
In the video, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Yudhvir Singh Charak, and Kuldeep Sen were also seen in the vicinity of Parag.
This marks the second time the Rajasthan Royals have found themselves embroiled in controversy regarding off-field matters. Previously, an issue arose concerning the use of a device by Romi Bhinder.
The BCCI Disapproves of Riyan’s Conduct
In a statement, the IPL noted that Riyan was found to be in breach of Article 2.21 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to conduct contrary to the spirit of the game. The incident occurred during the second innings of the match, when Riyan was observed using a vape inside the dressing room. Match Referee Amit Sharma imposed the fine on Riyan, which the Rajasthan captain has accepted. The BCCI is also exploring other options regarding the process for taking strict disciplinary action against teams, their officials, and players, in an effort to uphold the reputation of the IPL.
What Do the Laws on Vaping in India Say?
In India, e-cigarettes and vaping are prohibited under ‘The Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act’ (PECA), 2019. Under this law, the manufacture, sale, purchase, import, export, and advertising of such products are banned. Violations can result in heavy fines and even imprisonment.
Rajasthan Currently Sits Fourth in the Points Table
The current IPL season is unfolding successfully for the Rajasthan Royals. The team currently sits in fourth place on the points table with 12 points, having secured six wins and three losses in nine matches. Rajasthan will now face the Delhi Capitals on May 1st.
