The entire North India is currently gripped by a severe cold wave. Temperatures are continuously dropping from the hilly regions to the plains. Continuous snowfall in the mountains has intensified the chill in the plains as well. Dense fog blanketed several states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, on Monday, causing significant inconvenience to people.
Uttar Pradesh is also experiencing the brunt of the cold wave and biting cold. There are reports of a farmer and a young man dying due to the cold in Banda. Meanwhile, road, rail, and air traffic have been severely affected due to the fog. On Monday, more than 40 districts of the state, including Kanpur, Barabanki, Ayodhya, and Lucknow, were covered in fog.
Biting Cold in Delhi
The national capital, Delhi, experienced a sharp drop in temperature on Monday morning. People felt the biting cold. Many people were seen warming themselves around bonfires on the roadside. While dense fog wasn't visible on Monday, the wind was causing a continuous drop in temperature. According to the IMD, this drop in temperature is expected to continue until December 25th.
What will the weather be like in UP?
Uttar Pradesh is also experiencing a severe cold wave. Due to the increasing cold in several districts, the district administration has declared holidays for schools. People have been advised not to leave their homes unnecessarily. Speed limits have been imposed on vehicles on highways due to the dense fog.
Snowfall in the Hilly States
Meanwhile, the hilly states are witnessing heavy snowfall. The blanket of white snow has attracted tourists. According to the department, this spell of snowfall is expected to continue for the next few days. In Kashmir, the 40-day period of intense cold, 'Chilla-i-Kalan', began on Sunday with snowfall and rain. The plains of the valley received light snowfall, while higher reaches like Gulmarg and Sonamarg experienced heavy snowfall. According to the IMD, snowfall is also expected to continue in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
Traffic Severely Affected
Dense fog and increasing cold have severely impacted traffic. Road, rail, and air transport have all been affected.
