Aadhaar card holders have received a major relief as the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a limited-time benefit for users looking to update their Aadhaar details. Starting July 1, 2026, users can update or add their email ID to their Aadhaar card free of cost, saving the earlier update fee.
The initiative aims to encourage more citizens to keep their Aadhaar records updated while strengthening digital identity verification and access to online government services.
Aadhaar Email Update Free from July 1
Under the latest Aadhaar update rules, users no longer have to pay the ₹75 fee previously charged for adding or updating an email ID linked to their Aadhaar.
The free facility will remain available for six months, allowing users to update their email address until December 31, 2026, without paying any charges.
This move is expected to benefit millions of Aadhaar holders across India who have either not linked an email ID or wish to replace an outdated one.
Free Service Available Only Through the Official Aadhaar App
UIDAI has clarified that the free email update facility is available only through the official Aadhaar mobile application.
Users selecting alternative methods, such as physical Aadhaar enrolment centres or other update channels, may still be required to pay the applicable service charges, depending on the mode of request.
Why UIDAI Is Offering Free Email Updates
The objective behind the initiative is to improve digital accessibility and encourage citizens to maintain updated Aadhaar information.
Linking an active email ID with Aadhaar helps users:
Receive Aadhaar-related notifications instantly.
Complete secure OTP-based verification.
Recover account access if the registered mobile number changes.
Access government and digital services more conveniently.
Keeping Aadhaar information updated also reduces verification issues during banking, taxation, and other online transactions.
Benefits of Linking Your Email ID with Aadhaar
Updating your email ID offers several advantages, including:
Instant Aadhaar alerts and communication via email.
Enhanced security through email-based OTP verification.
Backup communication option if the registered mobile number becomes inactive.
Faster access to online government schemes and digital services.
An updated email address also simplifies document retrieval and identity verification across multiple platforms.
Who Should Update Their Aadhaar Email Immediately?
The free update facility is especially beneficial for:
Users who have never linked an email ID with Aadhaar.
Individuals whose registered email address is no longer active.
People who frequently use Aadhaar for online verification and digital services.
Citizens planning to access government schemes or financial services requiring Aadhaar authentication.
Since the waiver is valid only for a limited period, users are advised to complete the update before December 31, 2026, to avoid future charges if the fee is reinstated.
Several Important Rules Also Change from July 1
Apart from the Aadhaar update benefit, multiple regulatory changes related to Income Tax Returns (ITR), banking services, passports, and other financial rules are also coming into effect from July 1, 2026.
These updates could impact taxpayers, bank customers, and Aadhaar holders alike, making it important for citizens to stay informed and keep their documents updated.
