A three-match T20 series between India and Afghanistan is set to take place in September, with all three games reportedly scheduled at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. According to a Cricbuzz report, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has confirmed the dates after receiving approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

 

The three matches are scheduled for September 13, 15 and 17.

 

The development is significant for India's international schedule because the Afghanistan series overlaps with the window originally earmarked for India's proposed tour of Bangladesh.

 

India vs Afghanistan T20 Series Dates

 

According to the report, India and Afghanistan will play three T20 internationals in New Delhi on:

 

1st T20I: September 13

2nd T20I: September 15

3rd T20I: September 17

Venue: Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi

 

The Afghanistan board reportedly communicated the dates in a letter sent on August 10, stating that the BCCI had agreed to the proposed schedule.

 

However, formal confirmation from either the BCCI or Afghanistan Cricket Board is still awaited.

 

Afghanistan Set to Host India for the First Time

 

The proposed series would be significant for Afghanistan cricket as it would represent the first official bilateral series involving India to be hosted by Afghanistan.

 

The Afghanistan Cricket Board has reportedly asked media-rights holders to begin preparations for the series, including advance planning, production, scheduling and promotional activities.

 

This indicates that preparations for the three-match series are already underway.

 

India-Bangladesh Series Now in Doubt

 

The Afghanistan series has created a major complication for India's proposed Bangladesh tour.

 

The Bangladesh Cricket Board had originally planned a six-match series involving three ODIs and three T20Is between September 1 and September 13.

 

However, with India's Afghanistan fixtures now scheduled for September 13, 15 and 17, the original Bangladesh window has become increasingly difficult to accommodate.

 

As a result, the possibility of India's Bangladesh tour going ahead as originally planned has been significantly reduced.

 

Why Was India's Bangladesh Tour Postponed?

 

The proposed India-Bangladesh series was originally scheduled for 2024.

 

Political unrest and anti-government protests in Bangladesh led to a change in the country's political situation, after which the series was postponed.

 

The two cricket boards subsequently explored the possibility of rescheduling the tour for September 2026.

 

However, India has not provided a final green signal for the proposed tour, with security concerns remaining an important consideration.

 

Security Remains a Major Issue

 

Security has been one of the key issues surrounding India's proposed Bangladesh tour.

 

According to the report, Bangladesh Cricket Board President Tamim Iqbal sought discussions with government authorities and requested assurances concerning the safety of the Indian team.

 

He also met officials from Bangladesh's foreign ministry as efforts continued to determine whether the series could be staged.

 

So far, there has been no definitive public confirmation from the BCCI or the Bangladesh government regarding the final status of the proposed tour.

 

Could India-Bangladesh Series Still Happen?

 

Despite the uncertainty, diplomatic discussions between India and Bangladesh have reportedly continued.

 

Recent developments involving the two countries had raised hopes that the bilateral cricket series could eventually take place if the security situation improves.

 

However, the reported Afghanistan schedule now presents another major obstacle.

 

With India committed to three T20Is in New Delhi from September 13 to 17, the original Bangladesh schedule would require significant changes if the tour is to be accommodated.

 

Afghanistan Proposes September 14 Match

 

Another interesting development concerns the match dates.

 

According to the Cricbuzz report, the Afghanistan Cricket Board has proposed September 14 as an alternative date for one of the matches.

 

The date coincides with Ganesh Chaturthi, and the Afghanistan board has reportedly asked the BCCI whether either the first or second T20I could be played on that day.

 

If accepted, the schedule could potentially be adjusted, although the final dates will depend on the two boards.

 

What Does the Afghanistan Series Mean for India?

 

The three-match Afghanistan series gives India an additional T20 assignment ahead of the upcoming international cricket calendar.

 

Playing all three matches in New Delhi would also provide a compact schedule for the Indian team, with no travel required between venues.
