All BMC election results declared; BJP-Shinde alliance secures a clear majority; Raj Thackeray's MNS trails even behind Owaisi's party.

The election results for all 227 wards of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Mumbai have been declared. The BJP has made history by emerging as the single largest party in these elections, while the Mahayuti alliance (BJP + Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena) has secured a clear majority.

Party-wise seats (Total 227 wards):

BJP: 89 wards (Single largest party)

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray - UBT): 65 wards

Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction): 29 wards

Congress: 24 wards

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM): 8 wards

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS): 6 wards

NCP: 3 wards

Samajwadi Party (SP): 2 wards

NCP (SP): 1 ward

Mahayuti gains control of BMC.

The Mahayuti alliance of the BJP and the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) won a total of 118 wards, significantly exceeding the majority mark of 114. This gives the Mahayuti alliance control of the BMC. This is seen as the end of the Thackeray family's dominance that lasted for nearly three decades, as the undivided Shiv Sena had held power in the BMC for a long time.

AIMIM secures 8, and MNS secures 6 wards

The Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Uddhav Thackeray remains the second largest force in the opposition with 65 seats. The Congress won 24 wards, while the AIMIM secured 8 and the MNS secured 6 wards. Smaller parties like the NCP, SP, and NCP (SP) won 3, 2, and 1 seats, respectively.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis termed this victory a win for PM Narendra Modi's leadership and development policies. He said that the people of Mumbai have shown faith in the Mahayuti alliance and the city will now be taken to new heights.

The Uddhav Thackeray faction said they put up a tough fight and performed strongly in several key areas, although they fell short of a majority.

BMC is the country's richest municipal corporation

These elections were the first since the Shiv Sena split in 2022 and were considered politically significant. The BMC is the country's richest municipal corporation, with a budget exceeding ₹74,000 crore. All eyes are now on the selection of the new mayor and the standing committee, where the Mahayuti alliance will have complete control.

Mumbai chose development, voted against those in power for 25 years: Shinde.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday took a dig at the Thackeray brothers, Raj and Uddhav, saying the people of Mumbai voted against those who had been in power for 25 years and chose the "brand of development."

Speaking to reporters here, Shinde said the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance would have mayors in most of the 29 municipal corporations where elections were held on January 15.

Targeting the Thackeray family, the Shiv Sena chief Shinde said, "Our agenda was development. Some people fought the elections on emotional issues." He further added, "The people chose the brand of development and voted against those who were in power for 25 years."

The undivided Shiv Sena, led by Uddhav Thackeray, controlled the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), India's largest and richest civic body, for 25 years – from 1997 to 2022.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj, who had come together after 20 years before the elections, had tried to sell the "Thackeray brand" to the voters and projected themselves as protectors of Marathi "asmita" (pride).
