Smriti Mandhana on Brink of History: 133 Runs Away From Unprecedented 5,000 T20I Milestone

Posted on 15th Oct 2026 04:25 pm by rohit kumar

India women’s cricket captain Smriti Mandhana is on the verge of creating history as India prepare to face Zimbabwe in a three-match T20 International series. The left-handed opener needs just 133 runs to become the first batter in cricket history to score 5,000 runs in women’s T20 internationals, giving her an opportunity to achieve the milestone during her first series as India’s full-time captain.

Mandhana has scored 4,867 runs in 179 T20I matches since making her international debut in 2013. Her record includes two centuries and 37 half-centuries, highlighting her consistency at the top of the order. The upcoming series offers her a chance to combine a personal milestone with the responsibility of leading India in a new era.

India vs Zimbabwe Women’s T20I Series: Schedule and Venue

India and Zimbabwe are set to meet in a bilateral women’s international series for the first time. The tour begins with three T20Is in Raipur, followed by three One-Day Internationals in Vadodara.

The first T20I is scheduled for Friday, October 16, with the remaining matches taking place on October 18 and 20. The ODI leg will follow on October 23, 25 and 28.

Zimbabwe will be led by Josephine Nkomo and arrive with renewed confidence after securing a historic ODI victory over the West Indies. The series therefore presents an important opportunity for both teams: India will look to build momentum under Mandhana’s leadership, while Zimbabwe will aim to test themselves against a strong opponent.

Smriti Mandhana’s T20I Career: Numbers Behind the Milestone

Mandhana’s run-scoring record reflects her importance to India’s batting line-up. Since her T20I debut in 2013, she has accumulated 4,867 runs in 179 matches at an average of 31 and a strike rate of 127.47, according to figures reported ahead of the series.

Her tally of two centuries and 37 half-centuries underlines her ability to provide strong starts and anchor an innings when required.

The 5,000-run mark would be a landmark achievement in women’s T20I cricket. Mandhana needs 133 runs across the three-match series to reach the target, although whether she achieves it will depend on her performances and the opportunities she gets at the crease.

For India, her form at the top of the order will be particularly important as the team adjusts to a new captain and looks to establish its preferred batting combinations.

Smriti Mandhana Begins Her Tenure as India’s Full-Time Captain

The Zimbabwe series marks Mandhana’s first assignment as India’s full-time captain across formats. She takes over from Harmanpreet Kaur, who stepped down from the captaincy earlier in October but remains part of the squad.

Mandhana is not new to leadership at the international level. She has previously captained India on an interim basis, including in T20Is and ODIs. She also brings leadership experience from the Women’s Premier League, where she has led Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Her challenge now will be to translate that experience into consistent performances and results for the national side. Managing the batting order, developing younger players and making tactical decisions under pressure will be key aspects of her captaincy.

The Zimbabwe series offers an early opportunity to assess her approach as India’s full-time leader.

Can Mandhana Achieve the 5,000-Run Milestone Against Zimbabwe?

With 133 runs separating Mandhana from 5,000 T20I runs, the series will attract attention from fans following her record chase. Reaching the milestone would add another major achievement to her international career and make the occasion even more significant during her first series as captain.

However, the priority for India will remain winning the series. Mandhana’s individual record chase will be one of the major storylines, alongside the team’s tactical development and Zimbabwe’s efforts to compete against the hosts.
