There is a decrease in people with positive thinking about higher education in America. There has been an increasing number of Americans questioning the value of attending college and university. According to a recent survey by think tank New America, the number of Americans who consider college and university to be a positive impact on the nation has decreased by 14% since 2020.

Many of the findings of this survey report have remained stable over time. For example- There is a consensus among Americans that post-secondary education provides a good return on investment for students. But there has been a sharp decline in the perception of the impact of higher education on the country. Report co-author Sophie Nguyen said the decline in higher education was due to economic challenges. This survey was done at a time when gas prices had increased and more people were beginning to feel that an economic slowdown was coming.

Democrats and Republicans disagree on many aspects

73% of Democrats believe that colleges and universities have a positive impact on the nation. The survey found that Democrats and Republicans disagree about many aspects of higher education. 73% of Democrats believe that colleges and universities have a positive impact on the nation, with only 37% of Republicans feeling so.

77% of Democrats said that the government should bear the full cost of higher education

Americans are also divided on who should pay for higher education. 77% of Democrats say that the government should give money for higher education because it is good for society. While 63% of Republicans say that students should pay after high school education because they benefit from it. 67% of Americans agree that some sort of post-secondary education is needed for their child or close family member to achieve economic security.
