Asia Cup: PCB's arrogance in trying to save Naqvi's reputation was exposed; the team practiced after pleading with the ICC.

Pakistan appears to be backing down from its threat to withdraw from the Asia Cup. Pakistan's arrogance has been dispelled, and after much tussle, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may retain its team in the Asia Cup. Pakistan's match against the UAE on Wednesday is a defeat that would eliminate the team from the Asia Cup.

Top officials of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) were awaiting permission from Islamabad on Tuesday to begin practice and remain in the Asia Cup, but the players wore a look of uncertainty. They were unsure whether they would continue in the tournament. The Pakistan captain, players, or any staff did not attend the press conference on the eve of the match. However, the Pakistani players arrived for practice much later. Although tension was evident on their faces during practice, they tried to appear cheerful.

Won't Pycroft be the referee?

According to news agency ANI, the Asian Cricket Council has stated that Richie Richardson could replace Andy Pycroft as match referee for the Pakistan vs. UAE match. Meanwhile, PCB sources told PTI that after the PCB's pleading, the ICC reached a middle ground with them. Ultimately, ACC President Naqvi managed to salvage some of his reputation at home.

Pakistan Embarrassed by India's Refusal to Shake Hands

After defeating Pakistan on Sunday, Indian players refused to shake hands with Pakistani players as a mark of respect for the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. The PCB then demanded the removal of match referee Andy Pycroft, alleging he had violated ICC regulations. However, the ICC rejected this demand. The rejection letter the PCB received from the ICC was signed by ICC General Manager Wasim Khan, who himself previously served as PCB CEO.

Pakistan spent the day trying to persuade the ICC.

Tuesday was a busy day after the ICC rejected the PCB's appeal. It is understood that the PCB spent the entire day trying to persuade the ICC to appoint Richie Richardson as the referee for the match against the UAE. This could have somewhat salvaged the reputation of PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who is currently the Home Minister in the Shahbaz Sharif government.

Naqvi Meets Pakistan's PM

A section of the Pakistani media reported that Naqvi's scheduled meeting with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif was primarily about Home Ministry matters, not about withdrawing from the Asia Cup. Pakistan would lose approximately ₹1.4 billion (approximately ₹1.4 billion) if it withdrew from the tournament, a significant loss for the team. Consequently, the PCB was in no position to withdraw after threatening to do so. His only option was to convince the ICC not to appoint Pycroft as the referee in the UAE-Pakistan match.

PAK did not attend the pre-match press conference

A press conference was scheduled for the evening before the match against the UAE, but it was cancelled about an hour and a half before the Pakistan team arrived for training. A PCB source said, "The Pakistani players and staff did not want to make any statements and did not want to face any questions about the boycott."

Pakistani players arrived for a practice session.

There was speculation that the team might not participate in training, but the players participated in the practice session, while the Indian team's rigorous training had already entered its third hour. The intensity of the training sessions between the two teams revealed the growing gap in their level. The Indian team performed fitness exercises like the Bronco Run under the supervision of fitness coach Adrian Le Ru, while the Pakistani team performed a short, old-fashioned football passing session. Such sessions were prevalent 15 years ago.

Tension was evident on the faces of the Pakistani squad.

It could be said that the Pakistani team was trying to appear relaxed despite the defeat on the field and the ongoing problems outside, but the tension within the players could be felt from their interactions with the coach. The Indian media was closely monitoring the players' body language.

No Pakistani player attended the Indian net session.

No Pakistani player attended the Indian net session. At the request of the Indian media, captain Suryakumar Yadav celebrated his 35th birthday (which fell on Sunday, September 14) by cutting a cake on Tuesday. India had defeated Pakistan on its birthday.
