PSL 2026: Babar Azam Fumes at Press Conference; Responding to a Question on Strike Rate, He Says: "You Don't Just Lift Your Head and Hit Shots..."

The post-match press conferences in the Pakistan Super League are proving to be even more entertaining than the matches themselves. Just a few days after lashing out at a reporter for questioning his inability to finish matches like Virat Kohli, Babar Azam has now flown into a rage at yet another journalist.

The biggest issue plaguing Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam's T20 career has been his strike rate. When questioned about this during a press conference—specifically whether he had worked on refining his game, as hinted by the team's coach, Misbah-ul-Haq—Babar's response was nothing short of astonishing.

A glance at the statistics reveals that Babar Azam's strike rate is significantly lower compared to the rest of his teammates. Kusal Mendis, the highest run-scorer for Peshawar Zalmi this season, has amassed 309 runs in 5 innings at a strike rate of 171.67. Meanwhile, his Pakistani teammate Sahibzada Farhan has scored 249 runs at an explosive strike rate of 180.43, whereas Babar Azam's strike rate this season has stood at a mere 130.68 so far.

Following their 24-run victory over the Multan Sultans, when the issue of his strike rate was raised during the press conference, Babar stated:

"You have to play differently depending on the position you are batting at. Keeping the scoreboard in mind, you have to assess what the team requires. I believe you must first evaluate the prevailing conditions. For instance, the pitch in Karachi, where 240 runs were scored one day, did not offer the same conditions the very next day, and we struggled to even reach 180 runs. Therefore, conditions play a pivotal role."

The 31-year-old Babar further added:

"You won't encounter the same pitch every day, nor can you play the exact same way every day; the opposition formulates specific strategies to counter you. You cannot simply go out there and play shots blindly. Every single day, you have to step onto the field with a distinct game plan." "If you are batting during the first six overs, I know that the objective is to capitalize on the Powerplay. Subsequently, you have to build partnerships, take calculated risks, and target the bowlers." — Babar Azam.

Emphasizing the importance of partnerships, he added, "There are times when you manage to maintain a healthy strike rate, and times when you don't. That is precisely where the significance of a partnership lies; one batsman can alleviate the pressure on the other."

As for the match itself, Peshawar Zalmi emerged victorious in the 22nd fixture of the PSL, played between Peshawar Zalmi and Multan Sultans. This marked their fifth win of the ongoing tournament, and they continue to hold the top spot on the PSL points table with 11 points, while Multan Sultans sit in second place with 8 points.
